  • Friendly and well-equipped campsite on the edge of Le Grau-du-Roi
  • Montpellier, Arles, Nîmes and Camargue tours within an hour's drive
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, kids' club, restaurant and beach shuttle
Guests who’d like to make swimming a major feature of their holiday should be pleased with the options at Camping Abri de Camargue – this friendly site has a covered pool that’s open all year with water heated to at least 25°C, along with an outdoor pool that opens in high season for swims and aqua gym classes. There’s also a paddling pool where smaller guests can splash about safely. And as if that wasn’t enough, the campsite is also just a couple of kilometres from the nearest beach, with several other sandy stretches within easy reach too (particularly in summer, when a shuttle runs from the site to the beach…) The proximity of the beach isn’t the only bonus of this location – the site is also handily just on the edge of the traditional resort Le Grau-du-Roi for shops, eateries and activities, and has easy access to the wildlife-packed natural landscapes of the Camargue Regional Natural Park. Days out in Montpellier, Arles and Nîmes are all within an hour’s drive too. There's plenty to keep you occupied should you choose to spend some time on site, however – facilities include a play area, a kids’ club and a cinema as well as summertime entertainment for all the family. On the practical front, you’ll have access to a restaurant, a takeaway service, a bar, a barbecue area and a grocery store as well as bike rental, wifi, a launderette and toilets and showers.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Pool and facilities were great. Restaurant/bar was also excellent

Disliked: No toilet seats in any of the toilets? Not sure if this is a new French thing but many of the places we stayed in France were the same.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: The bathroom facilities were very good. The staff very helpful when the pitches flooded with deep mud. Came around with boards for us to walk on! Xx

Disliked: Unfortunately the pitches are earth and after heavy rain we were in a a muddy pitch. These should be gravelled so the drain well and become more stable pitches.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Pool, location, beach close by. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Menu options at bar. We were told they only had pizzas but had a full menu on display. Pitch had a hose to water trees and flooded our pitch. Had to pay for WiFi.

Local attractions

The Camargue area is perhaps best known as a place of watery landscapes, and you should be able to find plenty of those around here. Le Grau-du-Roi has various boat trips and watersports on offer (including windsurfing, kayaking and scuba diving) and a town beach, and there are a couple more excellent beaches close by at Plage du Boucanet and Plage de l’Espiguette (both about 10 minutes’ drive). To see marine life without getting your hair wet, take a trip to Seaquarium (20 minutes’ walk away) – or, to see if you can spot some of the land-based animals roaming among the surrounding wetland scenery, you may like to go out on a horseback adventure or a 4x4 safari (both can be organised in Le Grau-du-Roi). For a change of scenery, try a day of exploring the elegant streets of Montpellier (40 minutes’ drive), visiting the former home of Vincent Van Gogh in Arles (50 minutes) or checking out the Roman ruins in Nîmes (55 minutes).
