Ever been to the famed cliffs of Étretat? If non, get yonder soonish, for this Côte d’Alabâtre spot is among the best-known sights of the Upper Normandy region for its white cliffs of three arches and a famed needle: this is a place so purty that arty types like Monet and Courbet hung out here with their kit.

Just down the coast from Étretat is the beach of Yport, another Normandy spot famed for its cliffs – and just 800 metres from that is Camping la Chênaie, a family-friendly site stretching over 2.7 hectares.

The site has an indoor heated pool and a large well-equipped playground with bouncy castles, swings and a fair bit more, a pétanque court, ping pong tables and a TV room. Free wifi is available.

A grocery shop is open in July and August selling fresh bread delivered daily and the snack bar/restaurant makes takeaway meals including pizza.

The site was clean but found the cabins to close together 25/04/2017

    Disliked:

The cabins were to close together, no privacy. No space to sit outside cabin unless on decking. Cabin was permanently in shade. We had to keep the heating on as we were continually cold due to shade of trees. Cars had to be parked at the bottom by reception and luggage had to be carried up hill by yourself.

Noisy and no privacy! 01/08/2016

    Location-lovely seaside town.
Facilities were clean enough (no toilet seats).
Pizza from the snack bar was good value.

    Disliked:

Tent pitches were very close together and right on the main thoroughfare- overlooked on all sides.
Stayed on a friday night when the management failed to mention an incredibly noisy (THUMPING beats) pool party held for teenagers run by the animation club. As all tent pitches were right next to the pool there was no escape. On top of the obnoxiously loud music there was a microphone with the host and teenagers screaming into it regularly. And on top of that children slapping woggles onto the surface of the pool is an infuriatingly annoying sound. This would all have been forgiveable except there was no mention of it in advance and when i politely enquired to the bar staff at half past 10 what time it might finish, we were told 'usually at 10.30 but these things always over run'. The party was finally shut down at 11 but the teenagers remained noisy until well past this time.
Do not stay here if you are looking for a peaceful stay.

Local attractions

Get to those famed famed cliffs first: Étretat is one of the most recognisable spots of Upper Normandy and, we wager, among the most photographed. Writers and artists like Dieterle, de Maupassant, Gide, Laurens and Boudin have all holidayed in the area and the cliffs have inspired the paintings of Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet: set up your easel and see if the mood strikes you too.

The local town of Yport is a small seaside resort and fishing town known for its fishermen's houses and nineteenth century villas as well as being the setting for de Maupassant's novel Une Vie. And there's a casino...

Also in the area, visit the Abbey of the Holy Trinity about 90 minutes' drive away, and Fecamp (home of the Palace of the Dukes of Normandy) and the Musée des Terre-Neuvas, both within 15 minutes' drive. Or go inland to discover the Norman countryside, its groves, its forests, its meadows...
