Oh wow, what a spectacular location in eastern France, close to the Swiss border: Domaine du Bugnon sits in the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura, at the feet of a forested plateau laced with trails, which you can explore on foot (bring your best boots), by bike or on horseback. They’ll take you past lush valleys, waterfalls and lakes, and to observation points with splendid views of the distant Alps. But don’t think for a minute that you’ll be completely cut off from the world here (though it might feel that way) – this family-friendly site is a 10-minute drive from the village of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux, with its shops and restaurants, plus a skate park for the kids and a casino for the grown-ups… If the children don’t fancy having a go on the half-pipe, there’s a playground on site (with a trampoline and a sandpit), not to mention a vast lawn that is just perfect to fly a kite, and a games room. Meanwhile, the adults can relax with a game of pétanque or practise their backhand on the tennis court (for which there is an additional fee). After all that exertion, the infrared sauna (with a gentler heat than Finnish saunas) might help soothe any aching muscles (there’s an additional fee here too). Regional specialities such as fondue feature prominently on the menu at the restaurant, which also serves flaky pastries and freshly baked bread for breakfast. Enjoy your meals on the terrace, while taking in incomparable views of the lush mountainous landscape. In addition to a toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, the site has a launderette and a drying room.

Liked This campsite is an absolute gem. Small, beautiful, loved the pitches in the trees. Good size pitches, and only a few available. Facilities small but enough, very clean.

Owners friendly and accommodating. Very memorable few nights spent here to and from the Alps. Superb.

Liked The site was lovely, a small secluded spot for campers and campervans. It was the last day of the season in September so all the facilities were not available. Only on site for 1 night, showers/toilet were fine. Will come back in the summertime for a full assessment.

Liked Ici le mot Camping prend tout son sens, on arrive quand on veut, on repart quand on veut, pas du samedi au samedi, l'équipement est rudimentaire, mais l'essentiel est là, Camping calme accueillant, emplacement grand et ombragé, nous n'avons pas pu manger au restaurant car complet,

If the children (or you) are into wildlife, head to the Parc Polaire (25 minutes’ drive), where you might pretend to be in Alaska or Lapland as you spot reindeer and bison. For a more hands-on approach, the Parc animalier du Hérisson (35 minutes) allows the kids to get up close and personal with miniature ponies and dwarf goats. The collection at the Musée du jouet de Moirans-en-Montagne (45 minutes) spans millennia, with an Egyptian doll from the 16th century BC, medieval toys and vintage teddy bears, plus traditional toys from the Jura region. Plage de la Mercantine (45 minutes), on the Lac de Vouglans reservoir, is a picture-perfect spot for an afternoon by the water. Explore the wooded coves along the shore by pedal boat (you can hire one at the marina), then be sure to drive to the Belvedere Vouglans Dam (50 minutes), at the southernmost tip of the lake, for far-reaching views.
