Camping Sous Le Moulin: Pitches

General

  • Peaceful site on the shore of Lac de Coiselet
  • On the edge of the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park
  • Watersports and fishing for pike, perch, carp and trout

For a peaceful lakeside park, family-friendly Camping Sous Le Moulin is a sterling spot: settled on the shores of Lac de Coiselet next to the village of Condes, and surrounded by the spectacularly scenic mountains of the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park.

The entire park lies on the shores of the lake, and has plenty of pitches that look out directly over the water for views of the mountains that encircle the site. Water-based activities abound and include boating, windsurfing, waterskiing and canoeing. There's also some first-rate fishing to be had in the lake, which is stocked with pike, perch, carp and trout; the nearby Ain, Bienne and Valouse rivers are also brimming with fine fishy specimens.

Site staff recommend remaining on land at least some of the time so that you can try out the 18-kilometre circuit around the lake, or bike along the marked cycling routes that tour the gorges and viaducts that lie along the Ain.

Other stuff to keep you and the kids entertained include a big playground and a pétanque court, and you can pick up a newspaper on site to relax with at the water's edge along with a breakfast of fresh baguettes delivered direct to your pitch.

For food off site a supermarket lies three kilometres down the road, and a selection of restaurants are within 15 minutes' drive in the cultural hub of Oyonnax.

Amazing, picturesque location. Replacement site had good facilities.

    Disliked:

We had booked in advance but we told on arrival that the campsite was full, and so we were redirected to a sister campsite 20 minutes away. Check in generally slow.

This is a beautiful location overlooking the lake. It is mostly very French with permanent structures all along the banks of the lake. Quiet and peaceful and a great cycle ride all round the lake. Good bar and boule courts.

    Disliked:

The campsite had no record of our booking, made 3 weeks previously!! So we were sent to find a pitch. We were lucky with a lovely view of the lake but we noticed a lot of other people driving around looking for pitches and some areas were simply packed in amongst each other

This campsite is situated on the shore of Lake Ain in the beautiful town of Condes, Jura, France, 39240. Located about 140 km north of Chambery and 100km west of Geneva in a remote scenic area its well worth a visit. For cyclists there is a number of routes you can access from the site. Staff are very friendly and helpful here. What appealed to us was there was no checkout time, so no rushing to get off your pitch and get on the road.

Neglected site in a nice setting27/09/2021

    Setting by lake

    Disliked:

Washing and toilet facilities were a spider heaven, enormous webs were left uncleared with hundreds of spiders running through them right above sinks and toilets. Facilities were tired and cleaned with a hose so leaving you to wade through pools of water if you wanted to get to a toilet. Showers all had brown stains in the trays. In the end I felt the facilities were unusable and after a day's travelling did not get the shower I was looking forward to.

Generally the site felt run down with leaves uncollected and old, dirty static vans near the entrance. The reception was equally tiny, messy and uninviting. This was all a shame given the setting.

Beautiful location by clear water lake, surrounded by nature and pretty French towns. We stopped for 2 nights on our way further south, but would definitely come back.

The pitches were a good size (hard soil so remember a mallet and decent pegs), plenty of power supplies and drinking water taps around the site. The facilities were clean, just make sure you bring your own toilet roll and soap (apparently there were lots of big spiders in the roof so don’t look up into the rafters!).

Felt very family friendly, lots of people enjoying games of pétanque, swimming, fishing etc
Church bells in the village chime from 7pm, might irritate some bit we liked them! Fellow campers were respectful, noise was minimal at night and early in the morning.

You can order bread from reception for the next morning, also only a 15 min drive to a lovely bakery and butchers in Dortan. There is also a good sized supermarket at Dortan, or more options a bit further at Oyonnax.

Apparently you can hire canoes for 10 euros per person per half day.

Location. Size of pitches. Flat ground. Active but peaceful site.

    Disliked:

Would have liked clear pathways between the pitches on the lake’s shore because it felt like you were intruding on people’s pitches when accessing the lake.

Local attractions

Camping Sous Le Moulin is in a spectacular countryside setting among the hills, forests and lakes of the Jura region, next to the village of Condes. Direct access to the lake means lots of water-based fun that includes boating, windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing and fishing for pike, perch, carp and trout, and as the cliffs overlooking the site are home to plenty of rare species including peregrine falcons, red kites, swans, grey heron and chamois, this a popular haunt for wildlife spotters and birdwatchers too.

Outdoor activity options in the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park include hang-gliding and paragliding from Chancia-Montcusel, horse riding in Massiat, and canyoning and climbing trips a little further afield in Vevy – all you need to do is decide which one to do first.

A short drive will bring you to cultural Oyonnax, where in addition to lots of respectable restaurants there are also cinemas and concert halls aplenty, plus a museum dedicated to the city's plastics heritage with exhibits that display plasticky pieces from all over the world.

For a good mix of l'histoire and le spectacle, visit the ruins of Château d'Oliferne, just south of the site, where there's a 1.5-kilometre walk punctuated by historic monuments and views over the Ain valley, or the Cathedral and Brou Royal Monastery in Bourg-en-Bresse, a flamboyant Gothic masterpiece that comprises unusual monastic buildings, a church and three cloisters.

The Cerdon Caves and prehistoric theme park, just over 40 minutes' drive away, are well worth a visit; kids can get involved in workshops that will teach them how to hunt with spears, paint on cave walls, craft Neolithic pots and create fire from flint while you explore a subterranean cave network that emerges onto a viewing platform that overlooks the vineyards of Cerdon.
