You can get active right beside the riverside site of Camping Le Vert Lagon in the Haute-Saône region: it's adjacent to a leisure centre where you can hire bikes and canoes, tackle the adventure course or take part in a heap of other activities such as climbing, archery, laser biathlon, guided mountain bike trips… Whatever activity you pick, hiring a canoe at some point is much recommended, for there's rather a lot of waterways to navigate around here… Camping Le Vert Lagon's Ognon river surrounds are a fave locale in the region for getting around by small boat (and paddleboard) because of the small wildlife-laden islands around Marnay lake, 20 hectares of watery space overlooked by a medieval castle. About 16 kilometres away at Pesmes, hire a boat for another splendidly scenic drift along the Ognon. Le Vert Lagon is a peaceful site to hang around at, with plenty to do for days you're not out and about on the river: a good-sized outdoor pool, miniature golf, table tennis, a TV room and a pétanque court are all on offer. The snack bar has takeaways and a terrace, and barbecues are allowed on site. And as for occupying the kids? Also on site are a playground, free wifi – and an intriguingly-named acrobatic trail.

Local attractions

Hire a canoe at the leisure centre next to the site for an adventure on the Ognon river or among the islands of Marnay lake, top spots for birdwatching and picnicking. At Pesmes, you can hire boats to take out on its local stretch of the river, to pass its 16th-century houses and hillside castle. Camping Le Vert Lagon's Marnay setting is at the crossroads of the Haute-Saône, Doubs and Jura departments, with a good number of outdoor and historic sites to visit for day trips. One of the most famed of these is at Besançon, about 16 kilometres away, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Citadel of Besançon that's in turn home to several museums, a zoo, an insectarium, an aquarium, restaurants and shops. There's also the town of Dole, 31 kilometres from Marnay on the Doubs river, and Ornans 35 kilometres away, set prettily in the Loue river valley. Another well-known old sight is the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, started in the 18th century by Louis XV, or you could potter around the Château du Talmay and its seven-hectare park. For a bit more ante, the Acro'Mania adventure park is about 50 kilometres from Marnay in the forest of Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur.
