General

  • 18th-century forge among champagne vineyards
  • Between two sandy beaches
  • Trout fishing lake, indoor pool and bar-restaurant

A stay among the Champagne vineyards in the grounds of an 18th-century lakeside farmhouse, with access to the sandy beaches of Lac du Der Chantecoq and Château Cirey-sur-Blaise, anyone?

At this marvellously peaceful and well-appointed resort, a full range of excellent on-site facilities await for park-based leisure time that's chock full of fun and suitably relaxing relaxation time.

First off, the heated indoor pool and large grassy sun terrace take care of your splashing and lazing time in between sightseeing trips.

Then there's the lakeside bar and restaurant, which has a lovely big terrace overlooking the lake; here you'll be able to sample tasty regional dishes from set and à la carte menus, or order snacks to take away if you're not feeling fancy enough to dine in; during high season, the takeaway service extends to pizza delivery direct to your tent.

You could continue your French food odyssey by sampling fine local wines and champagnes and the region's best cheeses out on the restaurant terrace too – but don't fill up too much, because Sainte-Marie staff say the tractor trips to the regular barbecues that take place at a friendly farm nearby are absolutely not to be missed.

After spending the morning on a gentle woodland walk while the kids are thoroughly entertained with archery, football and other outdoor games via the kids' club (aimed at ages four to 14), spend the afternoon on the multi-sports field competing in archery or pétanque tournaments, or practise your painting and drawing skills among all the smashing scenery that's around. Fishing fans can also cast their line into the trout-filled fishing lake if they pick up a permit from the local off licence, and evenings are covered too, with live music nights and a campfire to sit and storytell around.

Please note

The indoor swimming pool is open between 22/04 and 09/09.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Beautiful secluded woodland pitches. Excellent facilities with restaurant overlooking the lake. Friendly check-in staff.

    Disliked:

We arrived in the early evening and the entire floor of the toilet/shower block was absolutely soaked - this made it very slippery and dangerous. They need to ensure that surface water is cleared regularly to avoid an accident.
I would have expected wi-fi to be included in the price as the pitch fees are fairly expensive.

Local attractions

Do you like champagne? Of course you do. It's a good job, because around here there's going to be heaps of the bubbly stuff on offer. Dedicate every fibre of your being to intrepidly investigating the local cellars to sample the region's fizzy wine, and bravely try out regional charcuterie meats and artisanal cheeses.

Get out and about on one of the site's recommended hiking or cycling trails – just pick up info at reception and follow one of the many routes that begin right there. Alternatively, the Château du Grand Jardin in nearby Joinville is just the job for a leisurely afternoon of strolling around historical landscaped gardens.

Lac du Der – Europe's largest artificial lake – lies less than an hour's drive from the site. There you can rent a boat to go fishing or birdwatching, or explore the 250 kilometres of marked walking and cycling trails that network the land around it. If you fancy doing absolutely nothing, then just stick to sunning yourself for an afternoon on the lake's sandy beach.
