  • British-owned rural site on the edge of Obterre village
  • In the Brenne Regional Natural Park, close to châteaux and a zoo
  • Peaceful site with bike hire, pétanque and a splash pool
Come along to Camping Le Cormier and you can be welcomed with a cheery ‘bonjour’ or a happy ‘hello’, for this Indre site is run by British owners Mike and Cath. They’ve been in charge of this splendid spot – spread across four acres of a 10-acre property just outside Obterre – for quite some time now, so guests can use them as local experts for advice on the finest local châteaux, vineyards and family activities. How long you choose to stay is up to you – it’s handily placed for stopovers given its position pretty much in the centre of France, with easy access to the A10 and A20 motorways, but it also rewards longer stays with plenty of activities nearby. For starters, it’s right on the edge of the Brenne Regional Natural Park, with lots of paths and quiet roads around; have a chat on site if you’d like to borrow maps or hire bikes for your explores. It’s a peaceful spot too: the grass pitches are all pleasingly spacious (averaging 180 square metres) and surrounded by trees for a bit of shade and peace, plus frequent sightings of passing wildlife. Each pitch has access to water, electricity, satellite TV and wifi. A toilet and shower block is nearby and there’s also the possibility of using a washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge and freezer in the main building for a small fee. It’s worth noting that there are limited facilities for keeping younger kids amused on site; the list of laidback activities here stretches to pétanque and badminton in the gardens, table tennis and darts in the barn and cooling dips in the above-ground splash pool.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Stayed for 2 nights on our way back home from the south of France. The owners are very attentive. I was shown the entire site by Mike who informed me of everything I need to know. The site is very level with large grassed pitches which are easily accessed. We have a twin axled caravan and could have fitted onto all pitches. The site has its own website which gives good advice on which roads to use to arrive at site. The site is pretty remote but that makes it so peaceful and relaxing. It is perfectly located for cycling. A van calls each morning selling multiple types of bread. The toilet facilities are second to none. They are locked every evening after 10pm which is, in my experience, unique but I knew of this before I decided to stay here. I would stay at this site again with pleasure.

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Hello, many thanks for taking the time to leave your review which is always appreciated. However, and in our opinion, there are inaccuracies in comments made and information has been ommitted..... possibly deliberately. It is realised we are not always able to please everyone but thankfully the vast majority of our visitors have a totally different overall opinion, whether that be in regard to being rurally situated (offering peace & tranquility), exceptional customer service, extremely spacious pitches, spotlessly clean facilities and with so much to do & see in the locality (as per the welcome information sheets provided to all our visitors). It is suggested you take a look at other reviews on PitchUp.com and you will see for yourself they all paint a totally different picture. As it happens, the vast majority of our business is from people returning here, year after year, with quite a few staying in excess of 4 weeks at a time, some even twice a year ! Information ommitted was that during the guided tour of the site upon arrival to explain where everything was, a complete lack of interest was shown. Then on the day of your departure, we had electrical issues which affected the whole campsite. After using a process of elimination, we eventually discovered the reason for the disruption was actually your motorhome - having a full domestic kettle, toaster, possibly water heater and then other appliances being used at the same time ! Inevitable embarrassment on your part when informed. Once again we thank you for your review which is most helpful. Thankfully though, so many other recent visitors have said they look forward to returning. Best wishes.

A lovely site but did not live up to our expectations.

Liked: A lovely friendly small site where we felt welcome. The owners were very accommodating and happy to show us around.

Disliked: The down side is that the “new’ shower blocks have only one ladies toilet and both male and female shower blocks are locked at 9.30pm and not open again until 7.30am. Whilst the owner apologised, if we had been aware of this fact we would probably not have booked this site. The owner did explain that it was locked due to offsite users - but we did wonder why the owners did not simply add a security pad with either a code or a key for residents on site. There was a small emergency toilet open at night which had no light, no lock on the door and no means of washing your hands.

From the manager: Hello, many thanks for taking the time to leave your review which is most appreciated, especially for your one night stop-over and very pleased to hear you feel that you were made welcome. However, there are inaccuracies in your comments and some information has been missed out. The new shower-block is locked at the earliest 10:00pm not 9:30pm. Some information ommitted is that each section has a separate fully disabled wet room facility which is often opened if it is noted that people are queuing to use the toilet. The site was not completely full at the time of your visit as it happens but has been the last week or so, with no problems whatsoever! Being a brand new facility, we are pleased to accept any suggestions and have already considered adding locks with key codes if deemed absolutely necessary. The emergency toilet referred to is actually for chemical waste disposal but so many of our visitors have stated, because it is so well appointed, it is ideal for anyone not having an onboard toilet - as it happens, the majority of our visitors do. The building has motion detected lighting throughout and it is explained that our electrician will be looking to rectify this for the toilet facilty left open so that it works during the night. Hand washing is actually available because the external washing up area is situated adjacent to the toilet and there is hand soap provided. Once again we thank you for your review which is most helpful. Thankfully though, so many other recent visitors have said they look forward to returning. Best wishes.

Liked: Lovely quiet site with plenty of space. Very clean. Friendly and helpful owners.

Disliked: Unnecessary noisy ‘cutting’ of grass just as we were packing up so loads of dust came into our van.

Local attractions

Continue those peaceful times you’ve found on site with gentle ambles around some of the local châteaux: Château d’Azay-le-Ferron (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to go for classic pointy turrets, while Château de Loches (half an hour) is a more imposing structure with a square keep and a collection of medieval armour. And then continue those peaceful times even further with a gentle round of golf at the nearest course (25 minutes), a soak in the spas of La Roche-Posay (25 minutes) or a bit of beach time at Bellebouche Lake (half an hour). Should the small sorts be demanding something a bit more suited to their tastes, take them up the road to Le Haute Touche safari-style zoo (10 minutes), help them hit high speeds at the local go-karting track (20 minutes) or plan a full day out at Futuroscope theme park (an hour).
