General

  • Quiet family site five kilometres from Baraize
  • Spectacular riverside setting: hire canoes or kayaks on site
  • Bar, shop and restaurant serving local dishes

It's near a natural park, so it's a cert there's a right pile of natural attractions and heady activities around Camping de Montcocu in the Indre department of France's Centre region.

Six forests and a fine lake are within 15 kilometres of here, for outdoorsy activities such as hiking and mountain biking, sailing and climbing – and you won't have far to wander to get out onto water either, as the site is on the banks of a river and has canoes and kayaks for hire.

About five kilometres from Baraize, Camping de Montcocu is within easy driving distance of the Brenne Regional Nature Park, a land of over 2,000 lakes and ponds making up a birdwatching haven. The serene river setting of the site is tiptop for fishing as well as waterside strolls and bike rides: have a look at the pics to see the scenery among which you'll be settling down.

Facilities on site include a restaurant serving local dishes (and scenic views), a bar, a playground and a pétanque court. A grocery shop sells essentials; local town Baraize has a newsagent, a bar and a café.

What a lovely campsite with exceptionally lovely people running it. The facilities were spotless, the on site restaurant was excellent and very reasonable. The river (which is technically a lake, which is weird) has a cordoned off section on the "beach" which is nice and shallow, but decent swimmers will have no problem in the rest of the river because the current is really slow. The scenery is fantastic. And at night there is plenty of wonderful owl chatter to send you off to sleep! Oh, and my kids thought the ice creams were AMAZING!

Location was perfect, this is literally right on the river bank. There is a swimming area and you can hire canoes and pedalos at a very reasonable price. It was a very laid back peaceful setting. Staff were mostly friendly. The lodge we stayed in was very basic but it was also very cheap. We will definitely be back.

The space. If it is not a busy day, you can have a spacious spot which we liked. The city offers free wifi from 8am to 10pm which you have to log in every hour and worked just fine for us. Loo and shower worked fine. The staff was very friendly.

    Disliked:

the pitches are located not on the river side. It is ca. 300m distance.
The sink for washing the dishes was just one. So you have to wait for your turn.
There is no soap dispenser in the loo/bathroom.

Small size of the place. Gorgeous riverside location. Great restaurant. Cabin small and basic but perfectly adequate. Surrounding area fantastic. So much to do and see especially if you like being active - endless swimming, canoeing, great walks, exciting mountain biking, culture and art. Lovely villages and food.

    Disliked:

Beds had no sheets so we slept on itchy blankets - not great.Blankets were also not quite sufficient to keep out the cold. It's probably best to bring some of your own bedding. Saying that..we would be back tomorrow if we could!

    Nothing

    Disliked:

We arrived on a Monday afternoon to find absolutely everything closed. No one was around to tell us where we could pitch our tent, or where any of the facilities were.
The views of the river on the website are very misleading as you are led to believe that you can see these from your tent. They are a short walk down a hill, and the view from where the tents seem to pitch is of a group of shabby looking mobile homes that seem to be lived in permanently. The piece of ground where you assume you pitch your tent is tiny, and with no room to leave your car close by.
The whole site had a run down, hillbilly feel to it, so we got back in the car, drove 20 minutes up the road and booked into another site.
The site was in the middle of nowhere, and would’ve involved fairly lengthy drives for food, and for days out.
This site is clearly cheap for a reason.

Local attractions

From Baraize, access the Val de Creuse hiking path, crisscrossing the countryside for 110 kilometres from Saint-Plantaire to Crozant. Baraize is towards the end of the trail, near Crozant: get there via the town, handsome lake and waterski centre of Éguzon-Chantome.

For more hiking, several forests are just inside the Brenne Regional Natural Park a little way west of the site. But the main pull of the 166,000-hectare park is nature spotting: migratory birds stop off around its lakes and marshes, and Brenne is home to a whopping 2,300+ animal and bird species. Information points and trails are at Rosnay and Saint-Michel-en-Brenne.

Windsailing, canoeing, boating, waterskiing, pedalos, swimming, rowing and fishing among scenic surroundings are all at Éguzon lake, seven kilometres from Baraize.
