  • A certified Accueil Vélo site, connected to La Loire à Vélo
  • Grocery shop, playground, library and TV room
Cycling types – get geared up. Taking to two wheels is a cinch from Camping de Montlouis-sur-Loire in Indre-et-Loire… all the way to the Atlantic coast should you feel so inclined. A certified Accueil Vélo site (that's 'bike friendly' to wheelie enthusiasts who don't speak the lingo), Les Peupliers is connected to a track of vast bike path La Loire à Vélo, running the length of the Loire to the coast near Nantes. It's also a short bike ride – or a couple of minutes' drive, if your seat is overly sore – from the town of Montlouis-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley. The site has been set up for family stays, where kids can get busy while adults get relaxed: the good-sized playground with swings, climbing frame and ping pong tables is set scenically so grownups can stretch out with a book while keeping an eye on their offspring, and the library and TV room has board games and a pool table for further amusement. There's a grocery store selling fresh local produce if your energy levels are high enough after a day's cycling to wield the barbecue tongs. A public pool is a 150-metre amble away for dips in July and August (they can give guests a preferential rate). But back to the biking – quite handliy for a region so dedicated to cycling, bike hire is on site for those who haven't brought their own wheels.

What customers say

This is a well-regarded, clean campsite with friendly staff and spacious, shaded pitches. Its excellent location next to the Loire river is ideal for cycling and exploring the region, with easy access to Tours. Facilities are generally well-maintained and clean, and guests appreciated the on-site food trucks and boulangerie service. Some noise from trains and roads was noted, and a few guests mentioned a lack of toilet seats and hand dryers. The campsite's name change caused some initial difficulty in locating it.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly staff, good size pitch, toilet and shower blocks clean. Password for wifi given on arrival but can only be accessed in loung area behind reception.

Disliked Campsite not very well signposted. There were signs for a site called Les Peupliers (i think this is correct spelling) which had orange tape covering the name. However these are the signs you need to follow. The site is in a dip and you don't see the actual name of the site until you are on the approach road which is not visible form the main road. Expecting to see views of the Loire river from site-doesn't happen. Need to cross over the main road and find a gap in the trees on the cycle path.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely clean campsite, well placed next to the river and only a short drive to Tours and numerous Chateaux's. We actually liked the licking of the gates from 10pm -7am as it meant it was secure.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Was a nice change from Yelloh Villages ' Le Talouch' where they put my trust back into the people of France. Pitch was quite big, had good on site vans that came on site, my daughter particularly liked the Kre van. Although there was no pool we were given free access to the municipal pool next door, which the kids said was one of the best camping pools they had used during camping.

The reception staff were excellent and very knowledgeable.

Disliked Not the campsites fault but there is a train crossing near that mad some noses late at night whilst we were trying to get to sleep.

Local attractions

La Loire à Vélo runs for 800 kilometres along the Loire riverbank for two thirds of its route, and greenways, low traffic roads and bike trails for the rest. Bike along the route to splendid Tours, about 35 minutes by bike, or for a gentler time ride the couple of kilometres via Rue Christophe Plantin to arrive in local town Montlouis-sur-Loire. As it's the Loire Valley, châteaux and vineyards are easily reached too, many within about 45 minutes' cycle. A ride of around 40 minutes on the local greenway will take you to the splendid gardens of the Château de Valmer, where you can also taste local wines. Within an hour and a half – or about 40 minutes by car – is Château de Villandry, or you could pedal 50 minutes or so to Amboise, to view the medieval Château d’Amboise and the Château de Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci once lived. Too much old stuff? Take the kids to marvel at the depths of the Grand Aquarium of Touraine, about half an hour's drive from the site.
