  • Family-friendly campsite on the banks of the river Vienne
  • A kilometre from Marcilly-sur-Vienne; Tours 40 minutes' drive
  • Bar, tennis, play area and canoe/kayak hire
If you're after a base for exploring the lakelands of the Brenne or the vineyards of the lovely Loire Valley, have a look at Camping de La Motte, an accommodating and agreeable site a kilometre from the quiet village of Marcilly-sur-Vienne. Set deep in the gorgeous green countryside of the Centre region, this friendly site sits on flat, shaded and well-planted grounds on the western bank of the peaceful river Vienne. The site hires out canoes and kayaks so guests can spend their stays floating through the local area, perfecting their paddle skills and spotting nature on the way – and what could be more relaxing than that? Away from the water, practically minded holidaymakers will give a nod of approval to the site's handy bar, laundry room, web access and play area, while those of a sporty persuasion will find plenty more active options at the tennis courts, pétanque area and volleyball nets. Secure bike storage is also made available to guests who want it. For a meal out, you have the choice between strolling a kilometre over the bridge to pick up sandwiches at the bakery in Nouâtre or carrying on for the same distance along the riverbank to see what's on the menu in Marcilly-sur-Vienne.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Campsite, pitches and location were great. Friendly owners and always helpful.

Disliked: Toilets and showers were dirty, with cob webs around ceilings, shower cubicles and light fittings. No toilet rolls. Plastic shower mats were broken. Generally very tired and in all in need of urgent modernisation and updating.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: The pitches are big and very private, with large hedges surrounding them.

Disliked: The toilet and shower facilities are terrible. They are very crubby and clearly not cleaned properly. Some shower heads and sink taps are broken. The showers cubicles are tiny and full of cobwebs, which have clearly not been removed for months. The whole place needs a good scrub and a proper clean.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Fabulous location next to the river and a small village on the other side of the bridge. Village had a bar (try the Grimbergen), a food shop (try the saucision) and the bakers. There was also a restaurant but it was shut when we were there. On the site the pitches are large and generally shaded. Some might say it is a little bit tired but I would charming and the host, Mr T, is a lovely lovely man. Watch out if he offers you a free cocktail - boom! You can buy breakfast and he can knock up an omelette but we had our own food. We did however sample his beer and an excellent bottle of chinon. We were there on the way to to the rugby and he set up chairs and we all watched France win their first game. Great memories. Ended up staying an extra night.

Disliked: Nothing. A few cobwebs here and there but they added to the charm.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Tony and Isabelle were so welcoming. We arrived at almost 8pm, yet they were still happy to cook us pizzas (which were delicious!!!) We had a choice of pitches. We didn’t realise, but we could have chosen a pitch backing onto the river with a view of Nouatre. Our pitch was still fab and we loved the fact it was hedged. The kids (10 and 8) absolutely loved the bouncy castle and trampoline. It was just a quick stop off for us on the way down to Sarlat, but they said they loved it and could have spent the week there 😊 Thank you for a lovely, but brief, stay 🙌🏻

Local attractions

Coming for the countryside? Camping de La Motte is right on the edge of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional park and within an easy 45-minute drive of the Brenne's landscape of forests and lakes. Both of these areas are full of bike trails, footpaths and bridleways, with the Voie Verte that runs between Richelieu (20 minutes) and Chinon (30 minutes) particularly recommended by your hosts. On arrival in Chinon, stop for a couple of hours to stroll along the riverbanks and take in the local landscape from the top of its Royal Fortress before carrying on to the equally impressive Château de Montsoreau (45 minutes), an art gallery in a scenic setting close to the confluence between the Vienne and Loire rivers. And for the rest of your trip? You might like to spend it vineyard hopping through the Loire's wine-growing areas (roughly 30 minutes), exploring the narrow streets and medieval monuments of Tours old town (45 minutes) or taking the kids off somewhere for a treat – a trip to Futuroscope (45 minutes) perhaps, if they're on their very best behaviour…
