What springs to mind when you hear the words ‘Loire Valley’? Elegant châteaux, maybe… or delicious wines. Well, both are within easy reach from Camping Le Moulin Fort, a peaceful, tree-shaded site on the banks of the river Le Cher (a tributary of the Loire), outside the village of Francueil and about 40 minutes’ drive from Tours. The proximity to the river gives you the chance to indulge in a spot of wild swimming, though there is also a pool on site (and a paddling area) should you prefer a more enclosed experience. And is there a more pleasant way of spending a summer evening than by watching the river flow past as you cradle a glass of regional wine in your hands? The wine is available from the on-site bar – though you might also like to build your own personal hoard as you visit local vineyards. A playground includes swings and slides, and the entire family might like to take part in ping-pong, miniature golf or pétanque tournaments; you can also set up the ultimate checkmate on the giant chess board. Charcuterie boards, pizzas and burgers are available from the restaurant, or you might want to spark up the barbecue. For provisions, the on-site shop should be your first port of call, or there is a supermarket in Saint-Georges-sur-Cher (five minutes’ drive). For breakfast, be sure to take advantage of the daily bread and pastries service. Level grass pitches come with optional electric hook-up, and the site also has two well-maintained toilet blocks (including facilities for disabled guests), a drying room and a launderette.

Liked Great location for cycling, well kept pitches and shared facilities.

Disliked The food options were limited to paninis and cheese/charcuterie platters and so there was little option to have a nice evening meal. This has changed since we went last year when the food was lovely, and is a shame.

Liked Location was good, staff were nice and the pitch was a good size.

Disliked Really smelly toilets from the men's urinals, it was so bad that the smell drifted into the ladies (apparently as I didn't go in there)

Liked Peaceful site next to the river that remained quiet despite its size. Good amenities - kayaking down the river under the chateau was good. Clean and useable facilities and good sized plots

Liked Shady pitch. Pools very clean and rules reinforced. Lovely friendly staff. Campsite felt very safe. Swimming and kayaking in Le Cher. Proximity to Amboise and other easily accessible chateauxs. Breakfast pastries. Clean facilities. Relaxing to sit by river.

Disliked Food in cafe could have been more varied (paninis were the main offering). Not so much to keep younger children entertained - play area not so exciting.

location 5 euros/j d'un adaptateur électrique coutant entre 15 et 20 euros prix scandaleusement élevé (+ caution) alors que on nous l'a prêté dans un autre camping
sanitaires vaisselle et lavabos vétustes et pas très propres
Dommage le site serait parfait avec qq haies de séparation en plus et surtout un un accueil meilleur

Liked Lots of clean facilities, good large pitches with plenty of shade. Great access to the river for swimming/paddle boarding etc. Pool is smaller than the picture but a great addition. Great location and easy walks/cycles to nearby attractions or local town.

Disliked Snack bar had limited food options - fish and chips (??!) and paninis only while we stayed. Tap water was a bit off recommendation would be to buy and drink bottled only. Wifi very limited by the reception only, but this could also be an advantage point to switch off!!

Liked Nous avons eu un super emplacement bien spacieux pour notre grosse caravane.
Un accueil souriant et une ambiance vraiment conviviale de camping.
Quel plaisir de trouver un vrai camping sans trop de bruit.
Ombragé, Plat,....nous reviendrons

Disliked Une odeur d'égout dans les sanitaires a certains moments.
Il serait peut-être intéressant d'investir dans quelques containers poubelles en plus car ça débordait de partout en fin de we et j'ai dû poser par terre dans l'espace prévu

Local attractions

Straddling the river Cher, the Château de Chenonceau (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk) was built in the early 1500s. Its elegantly opulent rooms house a remarkable art collection that includes works by Veronese and Rubens. The riverside formal gardens are a top spot for a stroll, before heading to the Labyrinth in the parkland.
