  • Peaceful family site on the banks of the Indre, in Indre-et-Loire
  • Five minutes’ walk to Azay-le-Rideau; half an hour to Tours
  • Bike and canoe hire; grocery shop in summer; swimming pool next door
With a lush setting in the spectacular Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, the tree-shaded grass pitches at Camping Le Sabot sit on the banks of the Indre River, in the department of Indre-et-Loire. A stay at this quiet and family-friendly spot means plenty of things to do with the kids. There’s an inflatable playground for younger offspring, plus a ping pong table and a TV room for older kids to lounge around in. Paddleboards and canoes can be hired on site for forays up the river, as well as bikes for adventures on looped cycling trails along the Loire and Indre valleys. In summer, the local municipal swimming pool (with lessons for any novices) is free for all site guests to use. Other bonuses of staying in peak season include a bread depot with freshly baked croissants and baguettes for breakfast, and a small grocery store selling ice creams, hot and cold drinks and delicious regional products. The historic centre of Azay-le-Rideau village (five minutes’ walk) has a couple of small supermarkets for stocking up on essentials, as well as lots of cosy cafés and bistros for whiling away lazy afternoons over leisurely lunches. The Renaissance-era Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, set on a quasi-island in the Indre River, is worth a visit for its gilded salons and collections of tapestries and portraits.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: The laid back approach, the helpful and friendly staff, the rural setting with just the facilities we needed (water, electric hook up, hot showers and washing up), the food truck on site some evenings, access to the swimming pool, level pitches, paddleboard hire

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Big pitches could pitch up where we liked. Very big site.

Disliked: Shower’s were totally useless no water pressure. Chemical disposal point along side washing up area. (How filthy) Traveler camp opposite rear of site. Dogs barking all day. Traveler’s coming up to pitches trying to sell item’s to you. Reception hardly ever open, they even have a note on the door to just pitch up and come back after 3.00pm, pretty dam useless if you turn up and want a wrist band to be able to use the pool. Take away van on site, food on offer (god only knows) if your from England you have no chance, duck in orange from a take away van ??.not as you would assume burgers fritte’s etc etc. Aire next door far cheaper. Pot holes everywhere.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Great location next to the beach, village and sand. Beach is great and the dune shelters the campsite from the worst of the wind. Facilities generally good.

Disliked: On site van for food has a €10 minimum spend for card payment and nearest ATM is a long walk away - this feels a little outdated

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Beautiful, relaxed site with plenty of space, and light shading from trees. Lovely setting by the river and really good location on the edge of the village, near the chateau Friendly and helpful reception staff.

Disliked: Toilet facilities not as good as would have liked. I'd prefer to have paid a bit more to have a toilet seat and soap to wash hands. Plus toilet paper in all of the loos would have been nice.

Local attractions

The castles of the Loire Valley are within easy reach, starting with the Château de Villandry (15 minutes’ drive), a Renaissance structure best known for its spectacular formal gardens. Built in the 15th century, the Château de Langeais (15 minutes) enchants with its slender turrets and parkland with views of the Loire. Stretching on the banks of the Loire, the city of Tours (half an hour) has an ornate Gothic cathedral and timber-framed buildings lining cobbled streets. Pink flamingos and turtles inhabit the botanical garden, while the Centre Aquatique du Lac has swimming pools and other water-based attractions. The Arboretum de la Martinière (half an hour) is the place for lakeside strolls and guided tours among bamboo groves, lush ferns and dwarf palm trees. There are also Japanese maple trees and ponds dotted with water lilies, lending the place a peaceful Oriental-garden vibe.
