Lakes? Yes, indeed – right there on site, in fact. On the outskirts of the the gorgeous Cher department town of Aubigny-sur-Nère, Camping des Étangs has a couple of good-sized fishing lakes to its name, with carp, perch and pike all up for grabs during your stay (and fishing permits sold on site). And that’s not all it’s got on site – the grass pitches here sit in the shade of oak trees so they stay fairly cool even in summer, and there’s a good collection of family-friendly facilities too. Chief among these is the heated pool, which hosts aquabike classes and has plenty of loungers for less active times. A play area and pétanque are also on site for guest use, and the poolside bar-restaurant is open all day in summer for snacks, drinks and ice creams as well as meals like burgers and salads. In summer you can kick the day off with the homemade bread and pastries sold on site; for evening meals you're welcome to bring a barbecue (pick up all the necessaries at the mini-market on site, or at the shops a kilometre away in Aubigny-sur-Nère). Aubigny-sur-Nère has good road access from the western and southern motorways, and its historic centre won the ‘Small Cities of Character’ award in 2018. As it’s historically a Scottish town, don’t be surprised to see men wandering around in kilts, especially during the Fêtes Franco-Écossaises (Franco-Scottish Festivals) in July.

Local attractions

A nice way to tour the area is by bike – you can borrow bikes for free for two hours a day on site, or rent them by the day. Local routes will take you through vineyards and open landscapes to interesting sights like châteaux – ask for maps (for bike rides or walks) on site. For more outdoor activity, let the kids challenge their inner Tarzan on treetop rope courses at Aventure Parc de Nançay (25 minutes’ drive) or bounce across the inflatable assault course at Étang du Puits (20 minutes). There are also horse riding stables close by, and you can hire canoes up int Sully-sur-Loire (half an hour). If there’s one thing most people know about this area, it’s that it's full of châteaux. Your closest is right here in Aubigny-sur-Nère, and you’ll also easily be able to take outings to places like Château de Blancafort and Château de la Verrerie Stephen (15 minutes) or further afield to the newly built castle at Guedélon (an hour). And of course, there’s also the wine… best experienced at the wineries around Sancerre (half an hour).
