Fancy a bit of the laidback lakeside lifestyle? Get yourselves Brittany bound and grab one of the glamping lodges at Domaine de la Héchaie, a peaceful rural spot five minutes’ minutes’ drive from the little towns of Marzan and Arzal. Some folk seek out lakeside stays in order to fit in a bit of fishing; others will prefer to spend a good chunk of quality time with their book/a drink/their own thoughts. There’s plenty of space for both sorts to rub along here, as the site’s fishing lake stretches out to a hectare in area, with plenty of pretty corners to plonk down (perhaps avec picnic?) beside the still waters. There’s also the possibility that you’re the sort who picks a peaceful place in order to have somewhere to relax after an active day… and if you are, this spot should suit you well: it’s within easy reach of lots of walking and biking trails, and a leisurely 20-minute drive from the Gulf of Morbihan’s sandy beaches. Châteaux, animal parks and historic towns and villages are all within a half-hour drive too – and if that’s not enough to tire the tiddlers out, there’s a playground and pétanque court to keep them occupied on site. It’s worth seeking out a market or two as you roam too (or stopping at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Muzillac), as each lodge here is kitted out with a fully-equipped kitchen, plus dining tables both indoors and out on the private deck. To keep the site safe for all ages, Domaine de la Héchaie is mainly car free: guests can use their vehicles on departure and arrival days to cart/pack up all their kit, but these must be left at the car park at the entrance of the site at all other times.

Local attractions

Time for a change of watery scenery? Leave the lake behind (sob) and head for the Gulf of Morbihan coast. The sandy beaches of Bétahon and Damgan are both within a 20-minute drive; aim for the latter if you fancy giving windsurfing, kitesurfing or sailing lessons a whirl. It’s worth venturing a little further along the coast to Vannes (half an hour’s drive) too. There are fab wanders to be had around the town’s ancient walls and through its medieval centre, and there’s also an aquarium, a cathedral and some fine formal gardens to visit. A beach in town is in town too (with a shallow sea water pool to keep the small sorts safe), and a harbour for boat trips to nearby islands. If it’s more history you seek, aim for the châteaux of Ranrouët (20 minutes) and Suscinio (half an hour) or the pretty village of Rochefort-en-Terre (25 minutes). Families might also like to look in on the Branfere animal park (10 minutes) and Monkey Forest adventure park (25 minutes), while those on a grownup day out can sample local tipples at La Maison du Cidre (25 minutes).
