General

  • Quiet and scenic site overlooking the River Étel
  • Within walking distance of a beach and the local village
  • Tennis court, ping pong table, volleyball court and pétanque court

Once again, you must look at the site pics before you read on... For Camping de Saint Cado in Morbihan's Belz region is a truly beaut Brittany site, and has views that will make you want to put down roots and stay forevermore.

Its location is truly smashing too, a pebble throw from the nearest beach, overlooking a harbour and within walking distance of its nearest village Saint Cado: we recommend booking at least a couple of weeks.

Camping de Saint Cado also overlooks the River Étel, known countrywide for its fishing (it was once one of France's main tuna fishing areas), and for its oyster farming which still goes on today (that's an oyster farmhouse in the Camping de Saint Cado main pic).

Elsewhere, peaceful pursuits in this lovely locale could include swimming from the local beach or lounging on the sands with a book, investigating the many restaurants and crêperies of the harbour, or simply strolling along the river when the sun sinks down in the evening...

Camping de Saint Cado has a tennis court, ping pong table, volleyball court, pétanque court and a games room. Bread delivery is available on site in July and August.

We loved this site and wished we could stay longer but it closed for caravans on 15th October remaining open, but with reduced facilities, only for motorhomes. The location is superb right alongside the River D'Etel and Saint Cado is the prettiest of places. The site itself is lovely with large grass pitches each with ehu. The showers are very good with plenty of hot water. Owner Gael, who speaks very good English, is very welcoming and informative about the local area. Port Louis some 15kms away is well worth a visit especially on Saturday morning when they have a local market. We would definitely recommend this site and have put it on the list to return.

What a gem of a campsite this is for a relaxed and peaceful break. Friendly English speaking site owner with a great sense of humour. Bread van on the site every morning and various catering vans on the site four nights of the week, the pizzas were fabulous.

Clean and modern toilet and shower facilities with plenty of hot water. Plenty of well tended flower beds around the facilities and reception, making it look welcoming and cared for.

There is free wifi, but the signal wasn't terrific where we were camping. It didn't really bother us because we just used our mifi box if we needed to access the web.

    Peaceful and quiet at night.

The village was literally a five minute walk away with a lovely little beach on the way.

There's a massive Super U five minutes drive away and an Aldi the same distance in the other direction.

Really affordable rates, I think I paid something like 160 euros for 7 nights in high season.

No swimming pool or clubhouse or on-site shop though, but then again we didn't want any of that. There is a play area for the little ones though, but frankly it could do with a bit of modernisation. Our five year old didn't seem to mind it at all.

I honestly would have given this site the full five stars but for that and a couple of easily sortable faults that I'll list below.

    Disliked:

The pitches weren't defined at all. I'm not one for borders, but the problem that we had was the fact that we were in a tent, nothing massive, just an old 1990 Lichfield chalet tent shoved in between a couple of French touring caravans. The caravan to the left of us was well into our pitch because the couple who owned it had formed some kind of canopied garden between the side of his caravan and the hedge that formed the end of the row of pitches. The caravan to the right of us had done the same thing so that he could park his car down the side of his caravan.

That meant that we only had about two thirds of what would have been a reasonable sized pitch otherwise.

Of course without definite pitch markings we couldn't argue the case so we left it and just got on with our break.

The other thing that I wasn't overly impressed with was the fact that our pitch was in the lee of an eight foot tall hedge that bordered the rear of the row of pitches. Judging by the amount of moss growing in the grass in the shadow of the hedge it looked as though it got a lot of slow drying rain in the winter months and someone had towed something heavy backwards and forwards across the rear of the pitch leaving ruts and furrows in the grass. That meant that, being in a tent with a groundsheet for a floor we could only use the front part of the pitch, limiting our space even more.

All that it needs is sanding and rolling and some sort of pitch borders adding so that people know how much space they're actually renting and none of this would be an issue.

None of this ruined our break in the slightest. It just meant that when we were at the tent we felt a little 'cramped'.

But as I said... Easily sortable.

The owners are friendly and helpful. They take pride in the sites appearence and are hands on. They are accsible key hours and always answer the telephone politely.
The tent pitching areas are well maintained.
The facilities, cleaning, washing, showering and toilet areas are well maintained.
The location has a brilliant view of the bay.
The site has visiting local food produce business, in the morning crossiant van and on different evenings take away businesses are on the site.
Children's play area was well maintained.

    Disliked:

The pitching tent areas were very close together with guide ropes crossing. This didn't allow much privacy as proximity meant that those wishing to "celebrate" their camping experience with friends in the evening led to disturbances for those families with younger children.

Good, clean facilities. Most nights visited by one of several quality local food vans The site entrance is just a few pine trees away from the estuary and its beach, with evening sunsets and views of small islands. 4 minutes' walk from the stone bridge to St Cado's small island with traditional buildings.

Absolutely loved this well kept campsite and area. The perfect place if you want peace and quiet. Pitches are well spaced out, there is an excellent shower and toilet block which was kept very clean. Gaen, the owner was lovely with a good sense of humour. He speaks English but he was very patient with my bad French and encouraged me to speak it. Also enjoyed practising French with the lovely French campers. Everyone said hello to us when passing and were so friendly and sociable.

Saint-Cado itself is beautiful. A real idyllic place to stay. A small beach 2mins from campsite and a good bar / restaurant down by the harbour. Perfect place to have a beer and some Moules Frites whilst overlooking the stunning estuary. There is a fab supermarket in Belz and there is also an Aldi which is closer. If you want loads of facilities on site maybe not for you but we loved it and we only wish we had stayed longer. We are already looking forward to going back next year.
