General

  • Under 10 minutes' drive or 20 minutes canal bike ride from Rennes
  • Spacious accommodation areas over 100 hectares of forest park
  • Play area, shop and extensive amenities including disabled facilities

Ever been to Rennes? If not, sort a trip forthwith: for rambles around the old streets and Place Sainte-Anne, buying armfuls of fresh produce at the market, pottering around the Museum of Brittany… and sampling cider and galettes all around town.

Already been to Rennes? Sort another trip forthwith – and save euros for shopping, cider and galettes with a stay at the Ille-et-Vilaine site of Camping des Gayeulles, in a forest park only three and a half kilometres from the fine old Breton city: that’s under 10 minutes’ drive, 25 minutes by bus, about 20 minutes by bike along the Ille-et-Rance canal, and any length of time on foot depending on consumption of Breton cider…

The scenic forest setting of this park covers plenty of room – 100 hectares are here to roam – and a wide range of amenities including toilets, showers, disabled facilities, a launderette and free wifi. A play area is to hand to entertain les enfants while les grownups sort dinner from the site shop; elsewhere, the site's forest park surroundings are home to leisure options such as miniature golf and treetop adventuring.

Although Rennes is rightly splendid, the site’s nifty location means you should get out and about around Brittany while here too: options include Saint-Malo and Cancale under an hour’s drive towards the north coast; Fougères 35 minutes to the south east and Vitré 40 minutes east… and quite a few smaller towns and teeny villages for more scholarly sampling of Breton cuisine.

Central to the city but close to the ring road. Good layout and amenities.

    Disliked:

Pitches are not level and standard ramps are not enough to compensate. No showers or toilets. Can be noisy if there is an event in the park.

Staff were very good & spoke excellent English. The facilites were very clean. The site was quiet so no struggle for showers etc. Only 1 toilet or block which was a but strange as this was not enough.
    Pitches were large & private.
A good bus service into Renne and only a short distance from the campsite. Beautiful city and well worth a visit.

    Disliked:

There was on site security patrolling the site 24/7. We initially thought this was a bit strange?
Out of the site taking a right turn we then saw a large migrant camp, mostly males living here. This explained the security. I witnessed a Male from the migrant camp using the facilities, showers etc, then leave the camp site & walk back to his site. This is concerning and would unfortunately prevent me from staying again.

Great location, great staff, good english, helpful, good facilities, best campsite i visited on this journey

    Disliked:

Only that the shower floor hadnt adequate drainage. so have to stand in the last persons smelly water. infact the whole shower room and had water on the floor, so have to try and dry without towel touching the water and makes awkward to change the underwear and socks

but that is just me being fussy, the place was really great, everything else 5 star, but lose one star in cleanliness for this small issue

Local attractions

There’s lots to do even closer to the site than Rennes if you don’t fancy a city day (perhaps if you’ve been overly enthusiastic in your tasting of Brittany cider). The site is in a forest park with a small lake and paddleboats, a treetop adventure park, hiking tracks and miniature golf… and a bar/brewery and a health club if you care to continue a leisurely theme indeed.

Get to Rennes with ease too, by hailing the C3 bus from the stop 500 metres from Camping des Gayeulles; services are every 10 minutes. Once in town, the Musée de Bretagne (Museum of Brittany) is at the Champs Libres along with a science museum and a planetarium. The Thabor botanical gardens are a pleasant place for a peaceful time, as are the gardens around the university and the walks by the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance to the city’s north west.

For day trips, a fine château is at Fougères (35 minutes’ drive); even small and reluctant historians should like a look at these. At Vitré (40 minutes), there’s another handsome castle, spectacularly lit up at night; again, even small travellers should like a look...
