It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious pitches 15 minutes' walk from Préty and the Saône river
- A 10-minute drive to Tournus, 30 minutes to wine village Saint-Véran
- Pool, deckchairs and kitchen facilities on site
With spacious pitches on an area the size of a football field and shaded by laurel trees, Villa Séverine sits on the Paris-Marseille axis, making it a clever stopover on journeys to or from the South of France. Of course, its Burgundy location also puts it in fabled wine country near the lovely town of Tournus, so there’s plenty going on if you choose to stay around awhile.
On-site facilities are simple but pretty comprehensive, with a shower and toilet block and a drying room so you can all keep yourselves clean (there’s also a solar-powered alfresco shower if you're feeling intrepid – it can be a tad chilly).
Simple dishes can be rustled up in the wooden kitchen hut, where there’s also a freezer to keep your stuff fresh. If you’re feeling sociable at the end of a day’s adventures, you can also have a natter with fellow guests around the communal table. Outside in the private garden, there’s a small splash pool to keep the kids happy and entertained, while you adults can chill in deckchairs, read those books you’ve been promising yourselves and (hopefully) catch some sun.
Source your daily baguette and bits and bobs for the dinner table in sleepy Préty (15 minutes’ walk), and for a change of pace, head to riverside restaurants in Tournus (10 minutes’ drive) on the banks of the Saône.

Local attractions
As this is prime Burgundy wine country, you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to tasting and buying fine regional vintages. Big-name villages to seek out include Puligny-Montrachet (45 minutes), Pouilly Fuissé (40 minutes) and Saint-Véran (30 minutes), where countless vineyards are open for tours – and en route you’ll discover gorgeous, hilly countryside too.
If you’d rather take your Burgundy break at a more relaxed pace, you can always sample a local bottle (or two) in the bars of Tournus (10 minutes’ drive). And if wine just isn’t your thing, this lovely old town has plenty to entrance you, from its riverside setting to the serene beauty of Saint Philibert Abbey, with its medieval cloisters and ceiling murals.
There’s masses for outdoorsy families to do close to base camp too: hire canoes to explore the Saône river (10 minutes), fish for roach at Etang de Seille (five minutes) or go hiking across dunes and heathland at the Dunes des Charmes (10 minutes).
