Villa Séverine: Pitches

General

  • Spacious pitches 15 minutes' walk from Préty and the Saône river
  • A 10-minute drive to Tournus, 30 minutes to wine village Saint-Véran
  • Pool, deckchairs and kitchen facilities on site

With spacious pitches on an area the size of a football field and shaded by laurel trees, Villa Séverine sits on the Paris-Marseille axis, making it a clever stopover on journeys to or from the South of France. Of course, its Burgundy location also puts it in fabled wine country near the lovely town of Tournus, so there’s plenty going on if you choose to stay around awhile.

On-site facilities are simple but pretty comprehensive, with a shower and toilet block and a drying room so you can all keep yourselves clean (there’s also a solar-powered alfresco shower if you're feeling intrepid – it can be a tad chilly).

Simple dishes can be rustled up in the wooden kitchen hut, where there’s also a freezer to keep your stuff fresh. If you’re feeling sociable at the end of a day’s adventures, you can also have a natter with fellow guests around the communal table. Outside in the private garden, there’s a small splash pool to keep the kids happy and entertained, while you adults can chill in deckchairs, read those books you’ve been promising yourselves and (hopefully) catch some sun.

Source your daily baguette and bits and bobs for the dinner table in sleepy Préty (15 minutes’ walk), and for a change of pace, head to riverside restaurants in Tournus (10 minutes’ drive) on the banks of the Saône.

    Nothing

Not a proper campsite, simply the garden of a house. Facilities not as advertised. Owner locked the gate and us in at night and was clearly stressed, telling us of women being abducted and having their head cut off. The lavatory was inside the owners house and did not have a sink to wash hands in. We were not given access to any shower or kitchen facilities. There are no obvious facilities for Campervans and the owner was concerned that our wheels would sink in the wet grass so we had to park next to the gate. We would not return to this location. We had to pay as much as we did at proper sites with full facilities-so poor value as well as an uncomfortable experience.

This site may be fine in summer, but in November the facilities did not match your description. We asked for the bathroom. Our host looked horrified and said that we had not paid for bathroom facilities ( news to us as it was in the pitchup spec). Being stoically british, we said that all we need is a toilet. This, it turned out, was in her own home, and had no was handbasin, really not hygienic when you are camping!! We were told that the door to her home would be locked at night, and when we pointed out we would then have no access to a toilet, we were told we could just "go in the garden". We were camped in her front garden, and going out for an evening meal entailed being "let out" and having to ring her on return to get back in, and having gates locked behind you, and being told like naughty teenagers "ok that's it now, no more going out!".

The description of this as a campsite where one would expect a reasonable level of autonomy within certain rules was not what we experienced.

In fairness, we slept well, as it was very peaceful, although we reflected that it was fortunate that none of us needed more than a wee in the night! It was also fortunate that we had brought hand-wipes, as this was our only way to keep our hands clean.

Altogether, this was an unsettling and unhygienic experience, and in no way matched the pitchup description.

We were beginning to use pitchup as we have just aquired a campervan, but this experience has severely undermined our confidence in your site.

I ended up too exhausted from driving to make it here as planned, BUT I wanted to comment on the excellent communication we had, which could not have been more swift or helpful and accommodating. I was really grateful.

Local attractions

As this is prime Burgundy wine country, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to tasting and buying fine regional vintages. Big-name villages to seek out include Puligny-Montrachet (45 minutes), Pouilly Fuissé (40 minutes) and Saint-Véran (30 minutes), where countless vineyards are open for tours – and en route you’ll discover gorgeous, hilly countryside too.

If you’d rather take your Burgundy break at a more relaxed pace, you can always sample a local bottle (or two) in the bars of Tournus (10 minutes’ drive). And if wine just isn’t your thing, this lovely old town has plenty to entrance you, from its riverside setting to the serene beauty of Saint Philibert Abbey, with its medieval cloisters and ceiling murals.

There’s masses for outdoorsy families to do close to base camp too: hire canoes to explore the Saône river (10 minutes), fish for roach at Etang de Seille (five minutes) or go hiking across dunes and heathland at the Dunes des Charmes (10 minutes).
