  • Peaceful campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Domfront in Normandy
  • Mayenne 35 minutes’ drive, and Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët 40 minutes
  • Two carp-fishing ponds; shops and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
With a peaceful setting deep in rural Normandy, La Géraumière is on 15 acres of leafy private land that calls to all keen anglers, thanks to its two lakes well-stocked with carp. But you don’t have to be into fishing to stay here; the lovely medieval town of Domfront (10 minutes’ drive) has shops, ancient buildings and a castle to please sightseers, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants where bon viveurs can enjoy a glass of Normandy cider to accompany tasty local specialities. Back on site, simple facilities tucked among the trees include an outdoor kitchen with a cooker, fridge, and washing-up sinks, plus pristine showers. Go about your day quietly and you might just spot deer or foxes among the trees. Take quiet moments to sit and listen to the birdsong, watch the kingfishers dipping into the lakes for insects, and on clear nights, gaze up at the stars in a sky free from light pollution. And of course, you can always befriend the owners’ livestock too: the roll call to date is ducks, goats and a pony – not forgetting the free-range hens, who might just venture onto your pitch to say ‘hi’.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A lovely welcome on arrival 😊 and great communication beforehand. We could choose where we wanted to pitch and with plenty of shade on offer too. The perfect location for us as we were keen to explore as much as we could on our gravel bikes 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️ Cosy, clean and quiet. Thank you 😎

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A hidden gem ,a lovely tranquil site surrounded by lovely countryside, admist mature trees. The owners couldn't of done more to make are stay enjoyable, offering place's to visit and what was currently on in the surrounding area, we were lucky enough to stay the Medieval weekend in near by Domfront. The facilities on offer are basic but always kept spotlessly clean and endless supply of hot water.

From the manager: We are surprised & sorry we didn't meet your expectations & that you wouldn't recommend us or return as this is unusual. We are surprised at your low scores for cleanliness & facilities. Whilst of a good age our shower block & kitchen area are cleaned every day & more if required. As you can see from previous reviews on this site & others that it has not been an issue before but we take your comments on board & strive as always to be better. Perhaps our site just wasn't the right one for you and the animals, countryside etc are more to other people's taste. We like to think we are helpful, laid back hosts & try to solve any problems quickly. Our range of facilities include a kitchenette, coffee & tea making facilities, a shower block with complimentary soap, shower gels, toilet paper. Although we don't have a sanitary station for your chemical toilet there are plenty of such points around. We hope you are enjoying the rest of your holiday and find the property you are searching for.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: If you are looking for a campsite to truly relax then this is the one to pick! Marc and Kari are fabulous people, so friendly and welcoming.. nothing is too much trouble. The pitches are not marked so you can choose exactly where you prefer. Electric hookup it available. There are 2 showers which are powerful and hot, a kitchen area for your washing up along with an oven, microwave, kettle, coffee machine and refrigerator for your use. There is also an array of mugs incase you need. Rattus the very friendly pony Is a gem along with the free range chickens. There are 2 large fishing lakes which you can fish from or indeed just relax next too. Along with camping pitches they also have 2 Calvados barrels for hire (we stayed in one on our last night which was comfortable) there is a caravan with awning for hire too if you just want to turn up and not have the worry of pitching a tent. The site is located rurally so is incredibly quiet but is also only 10 minutes from the medieval town of Domfront. We loved it and definitely will return!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Location peaceful and very pretty, Kari, our very friendly and easygoing host, warm, clean showers and toilets with shower gel and toilet paper provided, shared fridge and microwave plus useful array of kitchen equipment including pots and pans, plates, bowls, cups glasses and cutlery, tea and coffee on site for only €1 a cup. We loved the fact real campfires are allowed and there is plenty of well seasoned wood on site (might be worth bringing an axe or a saw), also enjoyed fabulous farm animals doing their thing, hens clucking, Muscovy duck foraging, baby goats playing and Rattus the pony neighing. Perfect place to base yourself for visiting the medieval hilltop town of Domfront (8 mins away) Mont Saint Michel and Bateaux tapestry (just over an hour) and a deep infusion of perfect peace, sparkling water and birdsong. We'll be back!

Disliked: Nothing at all but Just to say to whoever said in earlier review the showers don't stay on long enough, you just move the red bar over the shower knob and it'll stay on as long as you like!

Local attractions

Anglers may be happy hanging out at the carp lakes waiting for a bite, but there’s lots of other stuff to do too. You provide the pedal power on the Vélorail at Bagnoles de l’Orne Normandie (15 minutes) as you trundle along a former railway line in Andaine Forest (10 minutes’ drive), or you can bike sections of the long-distance Véloscénie as it wends its way along greenways through Domfront (10 minutes) to the Normandy coast. The kids (most adults too, in fact) will probably adore getting up close to handsome heavy horses at La Michaudière - Ferme du Cheval de Trait (10 minutes). If the kids need to let off steam after touring the castle and museums in Mayenne (35 minutes), a kayaking session on the Varenne river from Torchamp (15 minutes) or hiring a pedalo on the lake at La Ferté-Macé (20 minutes) should do the trick. Have wander around the Wednesday-morning market at Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët (40 minutes) and pick up local cider, cheeses and fresh fruit for picnics, or make a day of it by visiting the abbey at Mont Saint-Michel (an hour and 15 minutes) in the Bay of Normandy.
