General

  • In the D-Day landing zone in Normandy
  • Close to Utah, Omaha, Gold and Juno beaches and the American cemetery
  • Pools, fishing ponds, restaurant, pizzeria and kids' club

If you're venturing into Normandy to see the D-Day landing beaches – or for fishing, a friendly vibe, first-rate facilities and clean amenities, make the Calvados site Camping Port'Land your port of call.

The Port-en-Bessin-Huppain setting is fab, right in the D-Day landing area a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and within easy reach of the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. To delve further into the past, medieval Bayeux is under 20 minutes' drive away.

It might, however, be a battle to advance off site… For the Camping Port'Land mission is to give guests much to do. This includes four fishing ponds, and activities galore including a pool table, ping pong, table football, a playground and a bouncy castle. The heated indoor pool is family friendly; an additional, outdoor, pool is open in the sunniest months, with paddling pool, two slides and sun loungers alongside.

Activities like painting and outdoor games can be leapt into at the Little Frogs club, greeting those aged five to 12 daily in summer. Then gather the crew for traditional home-cooked cuisine and 'the best burgers in town' at the restaurant, or, in July and August, bag a tasty takeaway pizza.

Essentials are well sorted too, at the small shop next to reception, open for several hours daily in July and August. Adapters, board games and pétanque balls can also be borrowed on site (a small refundable deposit applies).

And the icing on this very friendly French cake? Electric hook-ups have been added to the car park for any guests who have late ferry departures, so you can still use the facilities before you leave.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Brilliant location for DDay Beaches and Memorials, also Bayeux Tapestry
Pitches were level, great size and we liked the privacy provided by hedges and trees. Apple, and pear trees were lovely and natural providing windfall fruit.
Staff were all friendly and polite.
Bar and restaurant were good, albeit expensive compared with the nearby village
Being able to order fresh bread, croissants etc every day was great.

    Disliked:

It was very quiet, low season on our visit, the weekend being busier than midweek of course. The toilets and showers really let this lovely campsite down, and they were dirty and blocked with the weekend visitors. We reported it and they were checked promptly. They are unisex which is ok, but some users think it’s ok not to flush, or leave remnants of their visit!
The toilet cubicles are way too small for the average adult. The toilet block is extremely compact and claustrophobic. There are a few loos in the shower block, which were a little better, but not much.
Lack of proper hand washing facilities was a worry for hygiene. There seemed a lot of unused space in the shower block, which if planned better could have housed better sized cubicles, hand washing and family bathrooms.
The shop surprisingly didn’t sell the kind of things you would need and expect such as butter, cheese and milk.

The toilet facilities are the main reason why this very good site hasn’t got 5 stars from us. Such a shame.

WiFi was charged extra for. It was very slow and annoyingly had to be rejoined every time you used it, even after a minute or two away.

From the manager...

Hello

Thank you for your comments, both positive and negative.
We have a project to renew the toilet and shower block
hopefully ready for this season.

The shop sells the basics but if you ask at reception we usually have butter and milk in the reserve.

Blinding site, something for everyone. Quiet pitches, a swimming pool (well 2 actually, 1 indoor and 1 outside).
Nice on site restaurant serving great food at reasonable prices, but the best marks must go to the reception staff - they were all outstanding, knowledgeable, fluent in English and extremely helpful.
The site is ideally placed for visiting the Normandy landing beaches, close to Bayeaux for the tapestry and the poignant British Military Cemetery.
We had a nice private pitch, enclosed on 3 sides.
A short walk down to Port en Bessin, lovely seaside fishing port with a daily fish market, cafes and a few restaurants. All in all, a lovely venue.

Local attractions

This fab site is centrally set in Normandy's D-Day landing zone, a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and close to the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword.

About 10 kilometres away, delve into the centuries-old history between England and Normandy (hint: it's rather fiery) with a trip to the famed medieval town of Bayeux, home of the even more famed Bayeaux Tapestry. Painstakingly stitched over a vast 68-metre length in the 11th century to depict the story of the successful Norman invasion of England by William and his crew, the tapestry is now housed in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, where you can marvel at it for a reasonable fee.

Within an hour of the site are the Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the English Channel; the seaside towns of Longues-Sur-Mer and Grandcamp-Maisy; Merville, where battle also raged on D-Day; the World War II battery of Crisbecq, and the Memorial Pegasus of Caen.

An Accrobranche treetop adventure park is nine kilometres away.
