General

  • In the D-Day landing zone in Normandy
  • Close to Utah, Omaha, Gold and Juno beaches and the American cemetery
  • Pools, fishing ponds, restaurant, pizzeria and kids' club

If you're venturing into Normandy to see the D-Day landing beaches – or for fishing, a highly friendly vibe, first-rate facilities and sparkingly clean amenities, make the Calvados site of Camping Port'Land your port of call.

The Port-en-Bessin-Huppain setting here is utterly fab, right in the D-Day landing area a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and within easy reach of the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. To delve back further into the past, medieval Bayeux with its world-famous tapestry is under 20 minutes' drive away.

It might, however, be a bit of a battle to advance off site... For the Camping Port'Land mission is to give guests a top time in all directions, via first-rate service, constant facility upgrades and stacks to do for all tastes. This includes (get ready, for tis a lot) four fishing ponds where whoppers of up to 30lb/13+ kilos can be landed, and leisure pursuits galore including a pool table, ping pong, table football, a playground and a bouncy castle for the kids.

The heated indoor pool is (of course) family friendly; an additional, outdoor, pool is open in the sunniest months, with paddling pool and two slides alongside as well as sun loungers for grownups to bask on while keeping a beady eye on the kids. (And as it's France, swimming shorts, board shorts or other baggy attire are not allowed in the pool, so it's time for the gents to strut in their Speedos, ta.)

Activities like painting, outdoor games, French Olympics and loads more of all flavours can be leapt into at the Little Frogs club, cheerfully greeting ages five to 12 daily in the summer months. Then take the crew to dig into the traditional home-cooked cuisine and 'the best burgers in town' at the restaurant, or, in July and August, bag a tasty takeaway from Pizza'land Pizzeria.

Essentials are well sorted too, at the small shop next to reception, open from 8am to midday and from 5pm to 8pm daily in July and August. It's well stocked with daily essentials as well as souvenirs, postcards, fishing rods and swimming costumes, including those Speedos if you're new to this particular version of French fashion. Adapters, board games and pétanque balls can also be borrowed on site (a small refundable deposit applies).

And the icing on this very friendly French cake? Electric hook-ups have been added to the car park for any guests who have late ferry departures, so you can still use the vast range of site facilities before you leave.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Everything! This was one of the best sites that we have ever stayed on. The pitches were large and well set out, we were on a serviced pitch, it was heaven. The pool is fabulous, we went in September so the kids had gone back to school, so I was able to swim twice a day, mostly having the pool to myself!
We went for a meal in the bar, my husband had salmon in a lemon butter, I had a mixed grill(steak, duck, chicken and bacon, it was delicious), cost 46Euros but that was with 2 pints of the local lager.
It is well placed for seeing the sites, we went to the Bayeux tapestry as well as all the D-Day museums, memorials, if you get a chance go to Arromanches to see the Mulberry Harbour, a truly awe-inspiring piece of engineering.
The staff could not do enough to help, they were so friendly.
Wi-fi is 15 Euros a week, but we found our roaming data was enough.

    Disliked:

Not particularly keen on unisex showers and toilets.

Was very clean, tidy and well kept plot. Very relaxing atmosphere. On our first night we dined in the on site restaurant and was very please with both the service and the quality of food ordered. Not long after being on the site it was mentioned that we would like to return. Also being in close proximity to Port En Bessin everything from restaurants, bars and supermarkets are easy to get to. We have already recommended it to family and friends looking for a camping holiday. Very child friendly with the indoor pool and daily activities available.

Clean facilities, friendly staff and lots to keep the kids entertained 30/08/2018

The site is geared up to keep kids entertained! 2 parks including an inflatable bouncy castle/slide which is situated just by the outdoor seating area of the bar. We didn’t explore the games room but lots of older children headed up there. The swimming pools were great and girls loved the slides!
Husband caught carp in the fishing lake by the sand so he was happily entertained too while the kids played in the sand!
Site was clean and very well maintained and staff were very friendly.
The village is lovely but it’s a steep walk back up the hill! Market day was great and well worth the walk! Some fixed price menus in the restaurants down in the village too if you fancy eating out.
Easy access to all the Normandy landing beaches.
Free WiFi for 30 minutes a day per email address and limited on what you could do with it! Didn’t pay for WiFi which is available as we didn’t stay long enough to benefit from the weekly price, day rate available.
There was a great magic show our first night there, it was mainly in French but very visual and worth a watch! We stayed over a weekend and into the week and the entertainment was a bit hit and miss over the weekend but didn’t bother us.

    Disliked:

Swimming shorts are a no in the pool! This is a problem for us but not for many! If you’ve changed into swimming shorts these should be as clean as any other swim wear! This meant my little boy and husband didn’t swim!

Pitches are great all split by hedges, really well laid out with lots of space around the van.
Entertainment and other facilities are really good - staff really helpful.
Location great - 10min walk to village with loads of restaurants and bars, supermarkets.
D-Day Lansing cemeteries and museums are closer by and really good, the kids even took interest.

    Disliked:

Toilets - not very clean and mixed ladies/gents. This is the only reason I would not stay here again.

Local attractions

This fab site is centrally set in Normandy's D-Day landing zone, a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and close to the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword.

About 10 kilometres away, delve into the centuries-old history between England and Normandy (hint: it's rather fiery) with a trip to the famed medieval town of Bayeux, home of the even more famed Bayeaux Tapestry. Painstakingly stitched over a vast 68-metre length in the 11th century to depict the story of the successful Norman invasion of England by William and his crew, the tapestry is now housed in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, where you can go to marvel at it for a reasonable fee.

Within an hour of the site are the Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the English Channel; the seaside towns of Longues-Sur-Mer and Grandcamp-Maisy; Merville, where battle also raged on D-Day; the World War II battery of Crisbecq, and the Memorial Pegasus of Caen.

An Accrobranche treetop adventure park is nine kilometres away.
