  • In the D-Day landing zone in Normandy
  • Close to Utah, Omaha, Gold and Juno beaches and the American cemetery
  • Pools, fishing ponds, restaurant, pizzeria and kids' club
If you're venturing into Normandy to see the D-Day landing beaches – or for fishing, a friendly vibe, first-rate facilities and clean amenities, make the Calvados site Camping Port'Land your port of call. The Port-en-Bessin-Huppain setting is fab, right in the D-Day landing area a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and within easy reach of the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. To delve further into the past, medieval Bayeux is under 20 minutes' drive away. It might, however, be a battle to advance off site… For the Camping Port'Land mission is to give guests much to do. This includes four fishing ponds, and activities galore including a pool table, ping pong, table football, a playground and a bouncy castle. The heated indoor pool is family friendly; an additional, outdoor, pool is open in the sunniest months, with paddling pool, two slides and sun loungers alongside. Activities like painting and outdoor games can be leapt into at the Little Frogs club, greeting those aged between five and 12 daily in summer. Then gather the crew for traditional home-cooked cuisine and 'the best burgers in town' at the restaurant, or, in July and August, bag a tasty takeaway pizza. Essentials are well sorted too, at the small shop next to reception, open for several hours daily in July and August. Adapters, board games and pétanque balls can also be borrowed on site (a small refundable deposit applies). And the icing on this very friendly French cake? Electric hook-ups have been added to the car park for any guests who have late ferry departures, so you can still use the facilities before you leave.

Local attractions

This fab site is centrally set in Normandy's D-Day landing zone, a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and close to the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. About 10 kilometres away, delve into the centuries-old history between England and Normandy (hint: it's rather fiery) with a trip to the famed medieval town of Bayeux, home of the even more famed Bayeux Tapestry. Painstakingly stitched over a vast 68-metre length in the 11th century to depict the story of the successful Norman invasion of England by William and his crew, the tapestry is now housed in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, where you can marvel at it for a reasonable fee. Within an hour of the site are the Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the English Channel, the seaside towns of Longues-Sur-Mer and Grandcamp-Maisy, Merville, where battle also raged on D-Day, the World War II battery of Crisbecq, and the Memorial Pegasus of Caen. An Accrobranche treetop adventure park is nine kilometres away.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: We enjoyed our stay at Camping Port'Land. The site was beautifully laid out. It was like staying in a park. The facilities were spotlessly clean. There was lots for the children to do. Bread available every morning. We would come again.

Disliked: Nothing

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Excellent restaurant Large spacious, level grass fully serviced pitch Heated swimming pool open late Close proximity to local village (walking distance) and Bayeux (driving) Very clean sanitary block

Disliked: Narrow lanes in campsite, difficult to manoeuvre large motorhome (greater than 7m) with access to pitch very tight. One way system meant driving all around the campsite each time to leave Games room was closed

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Great sized pitches with individual electricity and water supply and good hard standing. Lovely walk to the village though very steep. Ideal location for the Normandy Beaches and the Bayeux tapestry which was the main reason for our visit. Staff were friendly and spoke good English. We went at the end of the season so fortunately the activities appeared to have stopped and the site was quite quiet and the silence after 11.00pm was well adhered to. The toilet and shower block had apparently had a refurb and were very nice and clean, they were cleaned in a regular basis which was nice. Short walk to get a bus to Bayeux (excellent value and helpful driver) and plenty of tours of the beaches available locally..

Disliked: We backed into one of the fishing lakes and a rat ran across the back of our pitch in the first evening. Though refurbished the toilet shower block was unisex (normal in France!) which can be quite disconcerting as a female to walk out of the shower to find a naked man wandering past. We were at the end of the season when the site was quite quiet and there were still queues for the toilets and showers, so would imagine they are completely insufficient at height of season. We wanted to get a bus into Bayeux (which we did manage) and were provided with a bus timetable that was 2 years out of date and gave the wrong bus number.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: The facilities in general were fantastic Very clean, always seemed fairly quiet despite the campsite seeming busy No issues past 10/11pm with noise Really enjoyed our stay

Disliked: The service in the restaurant the first night was pretty poor and our pitch backed onto basketball court which was noisy till late. The entertainment again went onto 11 and was loud which was frustrating settling a child. But again quiet after 11 on the dot so was OK.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Pool, large well demarcated pitches, great location with cycle route to Omaha beach.

Disliked: First night we were camping behind the multi sports pitch and the live music was terrible! It was really noisy until about 11 pm . But I asked to move pitch and the receptionist was lovely . We were much happier in the tent area!

Liked: Lovely site! Our second time staying here, pitches are huge and the staff are, but so hardworking and friendly, they couldn't do enough for us. Lovely pool and plenty to keep the kids entertained. Nice bar, excellent food and we really enjoyed the live music. The town is also really beautiful with lots of lovely shops and restaurants, but be prepared for the walk the the steep hill!

Disliked: Showers have been refurbished since our last visit, but not a lot of space for towels and clothing and difficult to keep things dry when you are in the shower. Temp of showers also very variable!
