General

  • In the D-Day landing zone in Normandy
  • Close to Utah, Omaha, Gold and Juno beaches and the American cemetery
  • Pools, fishing ponds, restaurant, pizzeria and kids' club

If you're venturing into Normandy to see the D-Day landing beaches – or for fishing, a highly friendly vibe, first-rate facilities and sparkingly clean amenities, make the Calvados site of Camping Port'Land your port of call.

The Port-en-Bessin-Huppain setting here is utterly fab, right in the D-Day landing area a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and within easy reach of the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. To delve back further into the past, medieval Bayeux with its world-famous tapestry is under 20 minutes' drive away.

It might, however, be a bit of a battle to advance off site... For the Camping Port'Land mission is to give guests a top time in all directions, via first-rate service, constant facility upgrades and stacks to do for all tastes. This includes (get ready, for tis a lot) four fishing ponds where whoppers of up to 30lb/13+ kilos can be landed, and leisure pursuits galore including a pool table, ping pong, table football, a playground and a bouncy castle for the kids.

The heated indoor pool is (of course) family friendly; an additional, outdoor, pool is open in the sunniest months, with paddling pool and two slides alongside as well as sun loungers for grownups to bask on while keeping a beady eye on the kids. (And as it's France, swimming shorts, board shorts or other baggy attire are not allowed in the pool, so it's time for the gents to strut in their Speedos, ta.)

Activities like painting, outdoor games, French Olympics and loads more of all flavours can be leapt into at the Little Frogs club, cheerfully greeting ages five to 12 daily in the summer months. Then take the crew to dig into the traditional home-cooked cuisine and 'the best burgers in town' at the restaurant, or, in July and August, bag a tasty takeaway from Pizza'land Pizzeria.

Essentials are well sorted too, at the small shop next to reception, open from 8am to midday and from 5pm to 8pm daily in July and August. It's well stocked with daily essentials as well as souvenirs, postcards, fishing rods and swimming costumes, including those Speedos if you're new to this particular version of French fashion. Adapters, board games and pétanque balls can also be borrowed on site (a small refundable deposit applies).

And the icing on this very friendly French cake? Electric hook-ups have been added to the car park for any guests who have late ferry departures, so you can still use the vast range of site facilities before you leave.

The campsite was only a few kilometers away from Omaha beach and the American cemetery, which made for great convenience! The facilities were very well kept, although the bathrooms could have used some soap! We liked the restaurant, the food was excellent, and the bar selection was great. Very nice and cozy atmosphere. The fishing village less than a mile away was a very cool surprise! Thanks to the receptionist for suggesting the walk down to it.

    Disliked:

The address for the campsite was a little hard to find, and the birds around the area were very noisy in the morning!

From the manager...

Hello

Thank you for leaving such positive comments.
The campsite is much easier to find if you follow the signs rather than the GPS
system as it doesn't recognize completely where we are situated.
Glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

From the manager...

Hello

Thank you for leaving your comments and recommending our campsite to others.

We close the barrier at 10pm so as to keep the noise level down on the campsite.

we are currently updating our mobile homes and certain pitches
so maybe the shower block will be our project for next winter.

If you have children between the ages of 6 and 13 ,and you are quite happy to let them off the leash for 12hrs a day to run riot ,then this it the camp-site for you .

    Disliked:

5 star ,its is not ,by far . May-be a few years ago it was 3star . Tired, tatty ,over used ,cramped ,and not nearly enough showers of toilets for the amount of pitches . Ques at morning ,and evening peak times . Cramped felicities. Our pitch was booked in May ( premium ) we were planted right next to the pool . Screeching children from 8am until 9pm . This is not a good camp-site if you are looking for a quality holiday or short stop over . We left 2 days early ,asked for a re-fun ,but were told " we booked through Pitch-up ,so we could not claim a re-fund" .

From the manager...

Hello

Thank you.
Our pitches are far from cramped. They are between 140 and 200 m².
we have adequate toilets and showers for a 4 star campsite, as we are not a 5 star.
There is a kids club every morning and afternoon to occupy children from 5 to teens. It is up to our customers if they wish to use the facilities the campsite provides. We are not responsible for children running riot...they are on holiday after all.
we also have several events in the evening but not every night.

Sorry if you were unhappy with your pitch but if you had come to reception we may have been able to change it for you .

Loved this camping, the staff are wonderful and friendly and try very hard to speak English and make you feel welcome. They kids clubs are fantastic and the entertainers again are wonderful, kind and friendly.

toilets were clean and close by.

    Disliked:

The pitch could of been bigger for a family if 4 but we managed and the kids liked it. More sinks needed in the toilets and a it would be nice to have a smaller play ground for children under 3.

wonderful sized pitches. each having their own individual water and electric points. each pitch was clearly labelled and easy to find. the pools were looked after and clean and it was great to see a lifeguard supervising them.

    Disliked:

each section is separated by hedges, which makes for private pitches. therefore no one really mixes. the toilet and shower area though well maintained and clean where small, in the way of cubicles. for the showers there was no real control over them they where cold to begin with then hot in a direct jet. but no controls to adjust the temperature

Local attractions

This fab site is centrally set in Normandy's D-Day landing zone, a few minutes' drive from Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, and close to the sands of Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword.

About 10 kilometres away, delve into the centuries-old history between England and Normandy (hint: it's rather fiery) with a trip to the famed medieval town of Bayeux, home of the even more famed Bayeaux Tapestry. Painstakingly stitched over a vast 68-metre length in the 11th century to depict the story of the successful Norman invasion of England by William and his crew, the tapestry is now housed in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, where you can go to marvel at it for a reasonable fee.

Within an hour of the site are the Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the English Channel; the seaside towns of Longues-Sur-Mer and Grandcamp-Maisy; Merville, where battle also raged on D-Day; the World War II battery of Crisbecq, and the Memorial Pegasus of Caen.

An Accrobranche treetop adventure park is nine kilometres away.
