  • Family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Ambert, in the Auvergne
  • Cunlhat 15 minutes’ drive; Clermont-Ferrand one hour and 10 minutes
  • Wellness corner with Jacuzzi and hammam; play area and games room
In the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez, Saviloisirs is a peaceful holiday village – and a pretty sweet spot to use as a base for an exploration of the lush forests, elevated moorlands and ancient volcanoes of the Auvergne. If you stay here, chances are that that exploration will happen at a fairly leisurely pace, for you might well be distracted from your hiking goals by the on-site wellness corner, which includes a hot tub, a sauna and a hammam. If lazy afternoons spent pampering yourself are not your jam (and you’re determined to conquer the surrounding peaks), it’s still worth booking a 90-minute spa session, if only to soothe aching limbs post-hike and recharge you for your next trekking adventure. While you enjoy a soak in the hot tub, the kids might wander off to make new friends in the play area or the games room; if they (or you) are into tennis, remember to pack your rackets and balls, because there’s a court just across the street from the main entrance (and a volleyball court, too). Well-behaved four-legged friends are welcome, just as long as their vaccinations are up to date and they are kept on a leash in public spaces. Saviloisirs is a five-minute walk from Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine, where you can buy fresh breakfast croissants at the village bakery. There’s also a butcher’s shop here and a pharmacy; for anything else you might need for the barbecue, you’ll have to head into Ambert (15 minutes’ drive), where there is also a decent selection of restaurants.

Local attractions

A day at the seaside might not be a viable proposition in this central corner of France, but you can still hit the beach and have a swim (but be sure to check the latest regulations first) at the tree-fringed lake in Cunlhat (15 minutes’ drive). There are also barbecue stations and picnic areas here, plus plenty of shaded trails. At Améthystes d’Auvergne - Les mines de Pégut (35 minutes), you can learn the basics of geology and mineralogy during a visit to a mine with a plentiful amethyst supply (the purple striations in the rocks); you can also dig out your own gems (tools are supplied, but bring clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty). Clermont-Ferrand (one hour and 10 minutes) spreads around Place de Jaude, a monumental square with an equestrian statue by Bartholdi (of New York’s Statue of Liberty fame) of the Gallic leader Vercingetorix. L’Aventure Michelin museum has interactive displays on the iconic tyre brand.
