Lovely family feel to the campsite. Felt very safe and a great atmosphere. Rent a tent was great. Everything you needed to just turn up and start your holiday. Good 3 night stop on our way down south.

    Disliked:

Pool was pretty chilly but I'm sure this was mainly due to the lack of sunshine for our stay which apparently is unusual for the time of year. No toilet paper in the toilets.

Simon the owner and his family and helpers are so friendly and welcoming. Massive site but it feels like a family site with large pitches underneath the trees or out in the sun if you wish. Plenty of walks in the forest nearby with maps available FOC from the bar. Simon has time to chat with you and mainly english & dutch so language not a problem. If you want peace and quiet this is the place to come. Swimming pool not large but fine for what is needed. Shower and toilet facilities are getting on and a bit quirky at times but they are well maintained and clean and in fact the quirky just adds to the charm.

    Disliked:

Weather wasn't too king but you can't do anything about and the Wifi is restricted to the bar area but I was lucky we had a pitch quite near and I was able to use my booster to get a signal in the caravan.

We have recently returned from 8 nights at this really lovely site. We got a 4.20am channel tunnel and myself and my husband drove to the site in one go, just stopping to eat and for fuel, we arrived mid afternoon. Hidden down a lane on the edge of the forest it is really peaceful and quiet. Simon, his family, friends and staff are all very nice people, very knowledgeable about the area and where to visit.

There is a good mix of nationalities on site, British, Dutch, French And Spanish whilst we were there. It is popular with both people stopping off for a couple of nights aswell as those like us who were there for their main holiday.

Pitches are mostly gently sloping, a good size and shape, providing both sunshine and shade. EHU and water points are plentiful. There is lots of space for those who can just pitch without the need for EHU wherever they fancy.

There is a large shower block with separate facilities for ladies and gents, water in the shower is hot, washing up sinks, laundry sinks, washing machine, ironing facilities (if that floats your boat whilst on holiday) fridge and freezer were all available for campers to use.

There are a few static caravans and they have a few very well equipped rent a tents (had a bit of a nose whilst Simon's wife was doing changeovers), virtually all you would need to bring is your clothes

Bread can be preordered the night before (except for Monday, the baker has the day off on Monday). A bar by the pool also offers food, perfect if you can't be bothered to fire up the bbq! There is also wifi at the bar.

There are a couple of childrens play areas, with sandpit, swings, wendy houses, obstacle course, footgolf course, volley ball net, table tennis, football goals as well as the all important swimming pool for cooling off in the sunshine. The pool is great, it is inflatable, a reasonable depth for swimming but not too deep to worry about children being in there and getting out of their depth.

There is so much to do in about a half hour drive, lots of Chateaux to visit, some with guided tours of the interior, others you took yourself round, others you looked from the outside, a swimming lake with a small sandy beach just a few minutes drive up the lane, beautiful gardens and whilst we were there some really good brocantes in the local towns to browse the contents of other peoples lofts, spare room and garages, think we need to put the roof box on next time so we can make plenty of purchases!

We also drove around 100 miles to visit Puy de Dome, which was magnificent. A train takes you up to the summit where the views are to die for, paragliders were taking off and landing just a couple of metres from where we ate our picnic. We also went to the visitor centre at Volvic, which was free, where there was information in English, films with English commentary through a headset and then free tasting of all the different flavours of their water.

The forest surrounding the site is full of wildlife, we met (thankfully whilst in the car driving on a forest track) a family of about 6 wild boar, there are also deer, though we weren't lucky enough to spot any this vist. The campsite is home to red squirrels, they were lovely to see.

Prices were very reasonable, Simon seems to ne constantly looking for ways to improve his site and I wish him and his family all the best for their future. I certaintly wouldn't hesitate to return and will recommend it to all my camping friends looking for somewhere to stay.

    Disliked:

Shower cubicles were quite small with trays you had to step down into, Simon does plan to improve these in due course.

I would love it if there was a handwashing sink near the toilets with soap provided and loo roll, even if it was on a big roll outside the washblock as ive seen in some other sites in France, it is really annoying having to go back to the tent when you've forgotten to bring it and don't want to drip dry!

Ideal for families and couples. Could probably cater for small, organised groups of people too as the site is quite large but communal and friendly. We stayed in a fully equipped family tent equipped with a fridge and electrical supply. Fresh drinking water tap on plot - you need to take no equipment with you except for snacks/food provisions, torches and disposable bbqs etc, even so, local shops sell everything you could need, and hot food, drinks/ice creams are available on site.
Swimming pool and table tennis facilities on site, beautiful, very peaceful countryside/forested surroundings. For children (and grown-ups) you can do marshmallow toasting around camp fire at night - a must do activity, as was the lawn game, "Kubb". The camp site is illuminated with lamp posts until 11pm. Rutting stags can be heard at night - great for nature watchers. Interesting local villages and numerous Château and swimming lakes to visit for small fee or free of charge. The weather in this area during the summer is dry and warm. I highly recommend Champ de la Chappelle as it is well run, "unregimented" and situated in a stunning environment, Forêt de Tronçais.

    Disliked:

For those new to camping, take your own toilet paper with you. Male and female shower block was combined temporarily due to ongoing works but this was to improve facilities for next season.

Local attractions

Nearby is the small village of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais with its own lake, sandy beach, a number of shops (small supermarket, pharmacy, newsagent, souvenirs and cycle hire), a bar and pizzeria, and a doctor's surgery.

The forest walk starting from the village is very popular with visitors. All through the forest are spectacular sculptures and archaeological sites to be seen along the well-signposted trails.

A number of châteaux and villages can be found in the area, most noticeably the medieval village of Hérisson. The area has many vide-greniers (yard sales), the one along the banks of the Canal du Berry being particularly popular.

During the summer months medieval and artistic fêtes are a feature of the area and in August there is a donkey fair.
