  • Peaceful holiday park 15 minutes' walk from medieval Duras
  • Within easy reach of Bergerac châteaux and wineries
  • Fishing lake, pool, miniature golf and table tennis
France – but of course – has some of the best food in the world. And wine. And how easy it is to source considerable amounts of both, particularly when you're in the Lot-et-Garonne, a short drive from the châteaux and wineries around Bergerac and Saint-Émilion: eating (and drinking) options are plentiful around here. Once fed and watered, consider your leisurely options on site at Le Cabri Resort. Of which there are also many, ranging from bathes and basks in and by the pool, to testing your skills/luck at the miniature golf course. There's a fishing pond to hand too, as well as a playground, pétanque court, table tennis and free wifi. And then? Time for a further foodie adventure. Duras, 750 metres away, has several restaurants and cafés as well as a supermarket, some small speciality shops and a weekly market selling fresh produce and a range of local wines.

Local attractions

As well as its first-rate food and market options, Duras is well worth a look around (perhaps before partaking of too much of its food and market options…). The town's main feature is the splendid fortress of Château de Duras, a medieval castle over the Dropt valley that was once the residence of the Dukes of Duras; prepare to spend some time here to see the ancient rooms and dungeons then to climb to the top of the tower for spectacular views of the countryside below. Events such as exhibitions and concerts take place throughout the year. More historical hours can be had around the medieval archways of the bastide town of Eymet (20 minutes' drive) and the 13th-century Château de Rauzan (35 minutes), built high on a rock by England's King John. If the nippers' noses wrinkle at the notion of too much old stuff, animals, rides and zipwiring are all at Parc Du Griffon animal park 15 minutes' drive away at Caubon-Saint-Sauveur. You'd do yourself a disservice not to sample a few wines around here, and see where they've come from. Tours, tastings and expert tutors are all on hand in the plethora of wineries around Bergerac (40 minutes' drive) and Saint-Émilion (50 minutes).

It is a great shame that the site is in such a run down condition.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Lots of empty spaces and convenient for Duras to visit friends. Richard the camp site manager very friendly. Facilities worked and were adequate but needed to be managed better.

Disliked: Site rather run down and we were told it was about to close permanently at the end of August.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location, seclusion, proximity to Duras, good sized pitches.

Disliked: Misrepresented by Pitch-up rating of 4.5 which seriously over-rates it. Our impression was that there was a lack of understanding of the basic and fundamental requirements of a campsite such as a welcome pack and clean, tidy, and well maintained facilities. We couldn't contact warden by phone on arrival and were transferred to an answer machine. Poor management communication was evident as the warden seemed initially unaware of our booking which had been made and confirmed through Pitch-up more than a month in advance. The Pitches were reasonably sized, but poorly maintained due to apparently broken down tractor. The grass hadn't been cut for some time. The washroom and toilet facilities were not well maintained or stocked. Toilet paper was only available at only one of the toilets; no soap (a single empty soap dispenser at one of the basins); the showers had not been recently cleaned (dried leaves, dust and cobwebs in evidence, woodwork needed stripping and repainting). Although a cleaning roster was posted, there was little evidence that it was being adhered to - a point also raised by previous client last year! I had to search for a cleaning squeegy to wash and wipe the shower down before and after use as requested. My wife refused to use the facilities. The electricity and water hook-ups were poorly maintained, with broken and missing cover panels rendering electrical safety RCDs open to the elements - an accident waiting to happen, given their proximity to the water taps located below them. Given the lack of information and general maintenance, we didn't feel inclined to try the on-site restaurant, so can't comment on it.
