  • Peaceful park with a laidback atmosphere close to the Côte d'Argent
  • A 10-minute drive to Sainte-Eulalie-en-Born and 15 to Mimizan beach
  • Pool (open in main season), restaurant, cycle hire, wifi and play area
Is lazing in the Landes department on the list for your next getaway? Grand – get yourself ready for laidback times at Camping Las Chancas, a place with a couple of pools to park yourself up next to (open in the main season) and a lovely location just under 15 minutes’ drive from Mimizan beach. The complex is also close to Sainte-Eulalie-en-Born, just over a five-minute drive from the centre of this Nouvelle-Aquitaine town, in a region filled with forests. Mosey about under maritime pine trees – perhaps stopping off so the kids can climb up one or two – or bound over to the 3,540-hectare Biscarrosse lake for fishing, birdwatching and watersports (10 minutes’ drive away). If you fancy flitting around the region by bike, cycle hire’s available at the park (including tandems for in-sync couples); head to the reception for tips on where to travel on two wheels. Postcards, stamps and photocopies can also be had here, along with gas bottles to get you prepped for alfresco cooking. While you make lunch or chill at the pool (don’t forget to pack the Speedos – swim shorts aren’t permitted), the sprogs can set off for the playground to use the slide, swing and bouncy castle. Grab the kids later for some quality time on the pétanque court and ping-pong table, or head off site for activities like paintballing and golfing (around a five-minute drive).

Local attractions

Whether you’re a birdwatcher or beachcomber, Biscarrosse lake (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to be when on a hol in the Landes department. This body of water’s a habitat for diverse species and is edged by shallow stretches of sand for paddles with the nippers. It’s also fab for fishing and is just the ticket for trying out watersports including windsurfing, canoeing and boating. For coastal times, Mimizan (15 minutes) is the nearest beach on the Côte d'Argent – enroute, stop at the Landes Adventure Park to whizz down the largest zipline in France’s south west. More sandy spots worth visiting include Plage de l'Espécier (25 minutes) for dawdling among the dunes, and Plage de Contis (35 minutes) for watersports. Dry off and look to the sky for your next adventure: this area has a rich aeroplane-making heritage and is home to the Museum Hydraviation. Learn all about the local Latécoère factories here, where seaplanes were made between 1930 and 1955, and peer at the models, documents and lifesize aircrafts on display too.
