General

  • Beautiful view of the surrounding area
  • Quiet part of the Dordogne region
  • Close to Bergerac airport, from which you can hire cars

Camping La Brugère is run by René and Lieke, who live and run a working farm with sheep, cows and crops as well as the campsite.

The surroundings are rural and very quiet and there's virtually no traffic (just other happy campers.)
During peak season in July and August there is a weekly barbecue for visitors who want to join in - just bring your meat, fish or vegetables. You can just enjoy, sit back or prepare your food. Outside the summer period barbecues are sometimes organized weekly, depending on number of campers and weather permitting.

The old cow shed has been turned into a multi-functional space where the owners sell bread and run a little bar with food such as pizzas from the wood-fire pizza oven, spit-roasted free-range chicken, fries, ice cream and drinks. On cold days a fire is lit, which makes it a cosy place where you can have a bite and a chat.

Towards the lower part of the grounds, there is a little lake with a fresh water creek replenishing it continuously. Sheep regularly roam the grounds, keeping the grass short and the ducks are fun for little children, who can give them some bread. There is also a forest within walking distance (1km) with lots of sports equipment

On-site there is a volleyball net and plenty of space for a game of football, badminton or lawn bowls.
At night-time in peak season, there is often a campfire around the shed and you can have a couple of drinks and play games.

I liked several items about the site including, the owners who, speak very good English and, the brilliant bar/food area & bread service that they run. They have loads of returning guests year on year but these guests still made me, the only resident from the UK on site at the time, very welcome. I attended one of the Fri evening BBQs and was invited to sit with and made feel welcomed by, these other campers.

It is clear the site has a real family feel to it (which you could partake of or leave - your choice).

The night-time noises from the animals are some of the most interesting and it really does have a remote, close to nature feel about the entire place.

Ablutions are absolutely fine and efficient and had the added bonus of an electric point right beside a mirror so I could use and see what I was doing with the hairdryer.

Being able to decide where to pitch and to have as much space as you need was wonderful. There is plenty of greenery and a real feeling of remoteness on site.

    Disliked:

The signage to the site on the tiny roads in the area is not frequent and I needed the Lat/Long co-ordinates to find it but got there in the end. I guess like all good secrets, you don't want too many people to know about it. TIP - Don't direct SatNav to the village of St Felix as there are many tiny roads in the area and they dont all have the official notifications.

The WiFi is like the phone signal and site location, remote, and beyond the owners control.

Local attractions

We are located in a quiet part of the Dordogne region with two nice towns nearby: Bergerac and Perigueux.

Bergerac is by the Dordogne river: it has a very nice and picturesque old town centre with many restaurants, little shops and a big Saturday market.

Perigueux is even bigger and has a beautiful cathedral to visit as well as the Vesuna prehistoric museum.

There are many caves in the area and at the campsite there's a map with everything you can do and see nearby. A strong recommendation is a boat trip along the Dordogne river.
