  • Peaceful family park over five hectares in the Périgord Vert
  • Fishing ponds, pool, playground and walking paths
  • Bar and shop selling fish and lots of local produce
It's the Dordogne, so you'll already know it's going to be pretty lush. But Moulin du Châtain in the Périgord Vert five kilometres from Payzac is a splendid site even for these surrounds: by the water with two fishing ponds; on five green hectares in a peaceful wildlife haven, and set up so you can sample much local gastronomy with utter ease – the shop on site is stuffed with produce from local merchants and is close to lots of local markets. Traditional villages, vineyards, walks and bike rides are all easy to access from here, but you'll want to stick around the site for much of your hol too, whether you fancy fishing, strolling or just lounging about (avec eats). The site's setting on the Belles Dames stream is surrounded by ponds, one of which is reserved solely for Moulin du Châtain guests to cast off for pike, perch, carp and roach; there's a private pond too where you can arrange trout fishing for the day or half day. The site has a bar for guests' use, and – if you've been less than lucky in your casting off – trout is available to buy by the kilo at the fish farm open from April during fishing hours and all day long in July and August. Peaceful picnic areas are dotted around the park, alongside excellent leisure facilities including a pool and a paddling pool, volleyball, ping pong, a library with board games, and a playground with slides, sandpit and a trampoline.

Local attractions

A path through the site leads to the waterfall of the stream of Belles Dames, or you can potter for a kilometre from to the eco museum of Papeterie De Vaux, delving into the region's lengthy paper and stationery industry. Moulin du Châtain borders the Corrèze region, in a rural setting of caves, old villages and forges such as the nearby the Forges Savignac Lédrier in the Auvézère valley. The team also recommends hiking around the Auvezère gorges about half an hour away, visiting the village and cave of Tourtoirac, and exploring the châteaux of Jumilhac and Hautefort, both within 40 minutes. A leisure centre and indoor and outdoor activities of all sorts are at Rouffiac, 15 minutes' drive away.
