  • Peaceful family campsite in woodland at La Douze in the Dordogne
  • Half an hour’s drive to Périgueux, and 40 minutes to Lascaux Caves
  • Outdoor pool, games and animals on site, as well as a shop and café
With a leafy seven-hectare setting near the town of La Douze in the Dordogne, Ushuaïa Villages Le Bois Coquet is a small site just waiting to welcome kids of all ages. Family-friendly facilities include the heated outdoor swimming pool in summer, cute animals on the mini farm, a pétanque court, the playground, the tennis court… that’s quite a list already. And there’s more to come… near the tree-shaded pitches are two spotless toilet and shower blocks, one with areas suitable for kids, babies and people with mobility issues. There’s a washing machine to keep clothes looking smart, fridges for storing foodie treats and barbecues to hire. Kid-centric menus feature in the snack bar (think burgers and pizzas), and there's a takeaway service too. You can eat breakfast (order the night before, please) and keep kids going all day with a plentiful supply of ice cream from the bar. For maximum ease on family getaways, there’s a small grocery store at reception where you’ll find all the basics so there’s no need to jump in the car and burn petrol going shopping. In fact, the site owners are so keen to promote eco-friendly living that they save water with timed taps in the shower blocks, collect rainwater and use low-consumption lighting around the site. This is very much an outdoors-focused, back-to-nature sort of a place, and if you’re looking for loads of evening entertainment, it may not be quite the right getaway for you.

Local attractions

Set midway between Périgueux, with its Renaissance-era old town, and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil (both half an hour’s drive), backed by cave-strewn cliffs, Ushuaïa Villages Le Bois Coquet is in prime position for day trips in spectacular Dordogne landscapes. Head to medieval Sarlat-la-Canéda (45 minutes) for its cathedral and markets on pretty cobbled squares, or Beynac-et-Cazenac (50 minutes) to kayak down the Dordogne River and to visit the clifftop chateau. There are plenty more chateaux to see in the Dordogne too. Chief among these is 13th-century Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle (55 minutes), complete with a museum of medieval weaponry. Interested in prehistory? Go deep underground at Grotte du Grand Roc (20 minutes) to spy grottos full of stalactites and stalagmites, or visit the ancient caves complex at Les Grottes du Roc de Cazelle (25 minutes), where cave paintings and dioramas form part of the fun. See the ethereal animal frescoes at Lascaux (40 minutes), and to find out more about ancient man, visit the National Museum of Prehistory (20 minutes).
