Relaxing by the river

  • Well-equipped Dordogne site on the banks of the Auvézère river
  • Château de Hautefort 10 minutes’ drive; Périgueux 50 minutes
  • Wild swimming, canoeing, play area and restaurant; dogs welcome
The gorgeous Dordogne countryside is the setting for Camping le Clupeau, on the banks of the Auvézère, river just outside the village of Cherveix-Cubas. Owners Marie and Geoffrey have created a supremely well-equipped site that welcomes families with children and couples with their dogs, as well as motorcyclists travelling around this region of southwestern France. On a hot summer’s day, the best place to be is probably the river, where you can indulge in a spot of wild swimming, launch a canoe, find your balance on a paddleboard or get your fishing rod out. When you decide to head back to the site, you might decide to unleash the kids into the play area (or the games room, with table football and ping pong), while you relax with a game of pétanque or a drink on the covered terrace until dinnertime. That’s when you relocate to the on-site restaurant and sample Geoffrey’s tasty fare, prepared with top produce from trusted local sources. And if you overindulge, don’t worry: you’ll burn it all off in the morning, when you might tackle one of the many marked trails lacing the surrounding hills or steel your thighs for a session on the Voie Verte – La Flow Vélo. In addition to a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests, the site has a launderette and a drying room, plus recycling stations.

Local attractions

At the Château de Hautefort (10 minutes’ drive), the apartments of the marquis who transformed a former fortress into the palatial mansion you see today give a glimpse into aristocratic life in the 17th century, while holograms in the kitchen quarters reveal the daily tasks of his staff. The splendid and carefully manicured gardens are a top spot for a stroll. Only discovered in 1995, the Cave of Tourtoirac (10 minutes) features an underground river and spectacular rock formations. Unusually for this type of subterranean attractions, the cave is completely accessible, with a path for guests with mobility issues. The collections at the Périgord Art and Archaeology Museum in Périgueux (50 minutes) include paintings and decorative objects, plus ancient fossilised human remains unearthed in the region. Ancient Roman artefacts have a home at the Musée Gallo-romain Vesunna, and the multi-domed Périgueux Cathedral is also well worth a visit.
