  • Family-friendly site on the riverbank in Badefols-sur-Dordogne
  • Bergerac and Château des Milandes 35 minutes' drive away
  • Two swimming pools, waterslides and riverside bar-restaurant on site
What a Dordogne location this is – not only is Camping Les Bö Bains in a handy spot for exploring this lovely region of France, it is in fact right on the banks of the mighty river itself, with 600 metres of shaded riverbank to its name. This family-friendly site is in the little village of Badefols-sur-Dordogne, about halfway between Bergerac and Sarlat-la-Canéda – and that puts it within easy reach of all sorts of Dordogne days out, including château visits, canoeing and wine tasting, plus various family amusements. Not that you have to travel far to find things to keep the kids happy… for starters, the site has two outdoor swimming pools (one heated to about 25 degrees and the other with waterslides) and a paddling pool, all looking out over the river’s edge. As well as all that, there’s a large playground, miniature golf, a pétanque court and space for games of football, basketball and volleyball. A tennis court is just outside the site (with racquets and balls to borrow). After all that, you’ll probably need some time to relax, so it’s time to make your way to the bar/restaurant for meals or drinks out on the riverside terrace. The bar is also the place to connect to wifi or catch a bit of TV. The village has a bakery for your breakfast bits, and a restaurant for when you fancy a change of dinner scenery.

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Friendly staff and clean amenities. Pitch right next to river giving stunning views to wake up to and wildlife to watch. Pool just right for a cooling dip.

Disliked: Block paving around site needs reseating as very uneven, this was especially noticeable on the small path that leads to top of water slides. First night on site we were close to entertainment area, music (Karaoke) went on until 11.30pm, asked to move pitch next day which was accommodated.

Local attractions

For some people, a Dordogne trip is all about the chance to visit a château or two – and those people should be pretty happy with the options around here. The stunning Château des Milandes (with bird of prey demonstrations as well as castle tours) and Château de Biron (an intriguing mix of architectural styles) are both 35 minutes’ drive away. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (also 35 minutes’ drive) is another top pick, with a pretty riverside village to explore as well as the castle itself. Bit more history? Step way back in time at Grotte Préhistorique du Sorcier (half an hour) or visit the Fortified House of Reignac (40 minutes), built into the rock face. Bergerac (35 minutes) and Périgueux (an hour) are both worth a visit too, with some great things to eat and drink as well as historic buildings to look out for. If it’s time for a bit of outdoor activity instead, you can hire canoes from Trémolat (10 minutes) or bounce your way across the inflatable assault course at Etangs du Bos waterpark (25 minutes). Meanwhile, Univerland amusement park (half an hour) has various entertainments including go-karting, axe-throwing and laser games, plus an indoor play area for the under-12s.
