  • Family-friendly site in the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park
  • A 45-minute drive to Strasbourg; 25 minutes to Maginot Line
  • Indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, play area and summer restaurant
Alfresco Alsace breaks are often an excellent choice – and particularly when they’re also within the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park, as Camping Les Vosges Du Nord is. With trees all around, mountains as the backdrop and the village amenities of Oberbronn a kilometre away, this is a fine spot in which to settle for a stay in this area. Being in the midst of a natural park means that of course there are plenty of places to get out for a walk nearby. More activity? There’s plenty more of that nearby, including tennis, climbing, horse riding, fishing and miniature golf. If that all sounds a bit too much, select days out exploring the area’s castles, museums and pretty villages, or take a stroll around Strasbourg (45 minutes’ drive away). Wear yourselves out as much as you like on these outings, as there’s the prospect of a wellness centre waiting for you back at base: the indoor pool means that you can swim in all weathers, and there’s also a hot tub and sauna to aid in further relaxation. Various games (including table tennis, pétanque and volleyball) are on hand if you need a bit more activity instead, and there’s a play area for the kids. Come along in the summer season (May to October) and you can dine at the on-site restaurant, pick up groceries at the shop, buy ice creams and order bread to be delivered for breakfast.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This campsite gave us a true feeling of rural France, the location was set in the countryside with small towns in walking distance with real French restaurants serving delicious French food compared to the city full of chain restaurants and tourists. The staff were welcoming and chatty, the campsite was large which gave us optimum choice of where to pitch up our tent. The facilities were clean and plentiful.

Disliked: One morning the female facilities were closed of from use without reasoning, this lead me to have to use the male facilities. We had been used to unisex facilities so this was no issue, however, there could have been a sign left on the door to suggest why the female facilities were out of use and confirmation that it was ok to use the male facilities in the meantime.

From the manager: Hello, Kate, Thank you for sharing your opinion with us. We are happy to hear that you had a pleasant time with us despite some inconveniences. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the closure of the women's sanitary facilities. The toilets are thoroughly cleaned once a week, which is why they were closed. We have taken your recommendation on board and will be putting in place some guidelines when we close our toilets.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We stayed for 2 really relaxing nights on our way back through France. We really enjoyed this site and had a lovely relaxing time. We were pitched in a small area separate from the main site which meant it was really quiet and away from anyone else, there was a motorhome and a caravan with us the first night but we were alone the next night. The indoor swimming pool was a good size for a campsite and wasn't too busy even in August although you do need to remember to take your budgie smugglers. The bar & restaurant was really good and we ate there both nights. Worth a stroll into the village, there is a lovely bar for a drink and if you time it right the patisserie will be open

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The campsite was clean and well maintained. Bordered by a forest, it offered a nice protection from the wind and rain. The site itself was very large and the shrubbery gave some privacy from our neighbors, which was nice. There were plenty of activities for kids… especially the indoor pool, which turned out to be great on a rainy day. There is also a small store with the essentials (milk, snacks etc), which is convenient although the nearby village of Niederbronn has several good restaurants and a couple of small grocery stores. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. Overall, we had a wonderful stay.

Disliked: Some noise in the morning from the nearby operations… but since we usually rise early when camping it was hardly an issue. Wifi was only free for 10 min when creating an account… couldn’t be bothered to use it and used the personal hotspot from our phones instead.

Local attractions

One of the most striking landmarks around here is the Maginot Line, the 200-kilometre fortification built during World War II – its construction was ambitious at the time, and it’s still an eye-opener to visit now. A good spot to head for is Fort de Schoenbourg (25 minutes’ drive), where you can see it up close and learn about its significance. To step back a little further in time, places like Bitche (25 minutes) and Butten (40 minutes) give you a chance to wander through flower-filled streets to see half-timbered houses and even older buildings. For more on that front, make tracks to the châteaux of Wasenbourg, Schoeneck (both 25 minutes) and Fleckenstein (35 minutes) or set off to explore the ancient and modern sides of Strasbourg (45 minutes). If the kids need a rest from all the history lessons, perhaps steer instead towards the likes of Parc Tépacap (25 minutes) for trails through the treetops, or Didiland (20 minutes) for family-friendly rides of various styles.
