If your ideal camping trip involves peaceful countryside, exploring by bike and dodging the cooking, then you’d better set your cap at Tolne Camping, lying within a nature reserve and 10 minutes’ by car from the village of Sindal in North Jutland. Here you can wake up surrounded by trees on spacious grass pitches, follow cycle routes from the site, tuck into fresh rolls for breakfast (order before 8pm for the following morning) and graze on fries or sandwiches from the weekend food trucks. You can also pick up staples from the on-site shop, cook up a storm in the community centre’s kitchen and let your kids loose on the bouncy castle. Practical facilities to make your rural stay a breeze include electric hook-ups at the pitches, a spotless shower block with a laundry room, washing-up sinks and recycling bins, and electric charging points for vehicles. Tolne Camping lends itself to long, relaxed breaks, but it’s also a handy stop en route to Frederikshavn (20 minutes’ drive) for the ferry over to Gothenburg in Sweden, or if you’re heading for Norway from Hirtshals (half an hour). There’s a railway station in Sindal, so you can leave your camper behind and explore the region by train if the mood takes you.

Local attractions

Far removed from the tourist trail, this chilled country site is an ideal base for exploring northern Denmark. Cycling (bike hire is available) and walking options can be followed straight from the pitches; family-friendly trails lead through nicely flat farm fields, while there are mountain biking tracks for all levels of skill at Slotved MTB Spor (15 minutes’ drive) and in hilly Katsig Bakker nature reserve (10 minutes). Fans of watersports can try kayaking on the Uggerby River (20 minutes) or head for the beach at Løkken (40 minutes) for surfing thrills. When you’re just up for a gentle stroll by the sea, your best bet is the sandy expanse at Tversted Strand; there’s also a family-friendly beach at Bratten (both 20 minutes) with a playground. Favourite place of Danish artists, photogenic Skagen (35 minutes) is a coastal village of yellow-hued buildings containing galleries, museums and upscale shops. On the top of the peninsula is Grenen (45 minutes) where the waters of Skagerak and Kattegat collide; take a selfie standing with one foot in each sea.
