Far removed from the tourist trail, this chilled-out countryside site is an ideal base for exploring northern Denmark. Cycling (bike hire is available) and walking options can be followed straight from the pitches; family-friendly trails lead through nicely flat farm fields, while there are mountain biking tracks for all levels of skill at Slotved MTB Spor (15 minutes’ drive) and in hilly Katsig Bakker nature reserve (10 minutes). Fans of watersports can try kayaking on the Uggerby River (20 minutes) or head for the beach at Løkken (40 minutes) for surfing thrills. When you’re just up for a gentle stroll by the sea, your best bet is the sandy expanse at Tversted Strand; there’s also a family-friendly beach at Bratten (both 20 minutes) with a playground. A favourite place of Danish artists, photogenic Skagen (35 minutes) is a coastal village of yellow-hued buildings containing galleries, museums and upscale shops. On the top of the peninsula is Grenen (45 minutes) where the waters of Skagerak and Kattegat collide; take a selfie standing with one foot in each sea.
