- Five-minute drive to family-friendly zip lining and rock climbing
- Bikes, transparent kayaks and binoculars for hire; barbecues allowed
When paying a visit to one of Croatia’s most unmissable natural sights, you need a park to match up to it – and that’s where Big Bear Plitvice Camping Resort in Lika-Senj comes in. This outdoor-focused option is 250 metres from the edge of the Plitvice Lakes National Park – and a speedy half-hour drive to the entrance means you can beat the crowds and be one of the first to wander around the 16 terraced bodies of water and falls that make up this splendid sight.
If you’d rather glide through water than walk around it, Big Bear’s got transparent kayaks for hire, so you can meander along the crystal-clear Gacka River with a bird’s eye view of what’s going on below. Up for even more adventure? A five-minute drive from site, you can zoom across the valleys of Lika-Senj on the longest one-piece zip line in Europe. And at the end of the complex, there’s an artificial climbing area for those who like to get their kicks traversing walls.
You can also play an 18-round game of disc golf here – a sport mixing frisbee and golf – on a specially created field. The zones are reachable by walking, jogging or cycling and you can play alone, as pairs or in bigger groups.
Back at base and ready to eat? There’s a shop selling local cheese and honey in the village of Donji Babin Potok. Or a bigger store is less five minutes' drive from the site in the opposite direction to Plitvice, where you can pick up meat for a relaxed barbecue.

Local attractions
Plitvice Lakes is a hugely popular tourist site – one of the most visited in Croatia. You could spend multiple days ambling across the over-water walkways and taking boat trips on the terraced lakes in all their jewel-green glory.
Up for even more adventure? A five-minute drive from site, zoom across the valleys of Lika-Senj on the longest one-piece zipline in Europe. At the end of the complex, there’s an artificial climbing area for those who’d rather get their kicks traversing a wall.
Prefer to go off on two wheels? Big Bear has bikes for hire, so you can traverse the 150 kilometres of marked paths across Lika-Sens’ fields and the Mala Kapela forest, a 35-minute drive from camp. Ask staff for a route – there’s a recommended round trip called the ‘Hidden Treasures of Gacka’. They’ll also let you borrow a pair of binoculars so you can get a closer look at any creatures you pass along the way, like the fallow deer that call this region their home.
To guarantee a look-see at some of the region’s most well-known animals, head 45 minutes away from base to the Bear Refuge, a sanctuary for these mistreated creatures.
