  • Family-run campground over 20 acres of forest near Vojnić
  • Within around an hour's drive of Rastoke, Zagreb and Plitvice Lakes
  • Restaurant on site serving organic meals of local produce
Those who aren’t fluent in the Croatian lingo may not be aware at first glance how apt a name is Camping Bogata Šuma. A quick look at the attached pics, however, will quickly give you the notion that indeed the name ‘Rich Forest’ is rather fitting for this family-run site in the Karlovac region… If you’re in search of a peaceful place to settle for a while, this site should surely do the trick: there’s heaps of space, shade, quiet and privacy to be had around its 20 acres. It’s all been set up to preserve the natural environment, so you may well spot wildlife as you wander around the site or as you set off on walks or bike rides in the surrounding area. Reckon such a green area must be ripe with good food too? There you’d be correct, and the best way to try it out is to take your place at the dinner table on site, where one family member happens to be a trainee chef cooking up organic meals. What’s on the menu depends on the season and what’s been harvested around the grounds or locally recently (but it’s all likely to be tasty…) To try out more of the local fare, it’s a 10-minute drive to Vojnić for cafés, a restaurant meal or to pick up ingredients in the supermarket for a barbecue back at base (each pitch has a firepit so it’s a fine idea to plan an alfresco evening by the fire). Herbal teas, fresh eggs and garden produce can all be bought on site too.

Electric optional mixed tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It's a pleasant forest setting and run by a friendly Dutch couple. It's conveniently placed for visiting the famous Plitvick lakes national park, and Zagreb. The surrounding region is very attractive. The site is a long way from streetlights so the view of the stars at night is amazing!

Disliked: Facilities are very basic, which I didn't mind but the site is quite expensive for what it offers. There is no access to Wi-Fi on site, although in the local village near community offices free Wi-Fi is available.

Local attractions

Come along here ready to roam: the area around Camping Bogata Šuma is packed with places to walk or take bike rides through the woods and hills. Need insider tips on the best places to wander? The folk on site are always happy to let you in on their favourite places to explore – they may well send you off to the trails around Petrova Gora (50 minutes’ drive) to find a ‘forgotten’ monument from the communist era, or advise you of routes that take in swimming spots on the Korana or Mreznica rivers. For a taste of traditional Croatia, head to Rastoke (40 minutes), where the old wooden houses are still very much in evidence and you can seek out little corners like the old mill and the ethnographic museum. There are some spectacular waterfalls and a hidden cave over here too, so it’s worth planning a whole day to explore it all. If you’re after ticking off some of Croatia’s big attractions, you can get to both Zagreb and the Plitvice Lakes National Park with a drive of an hour or so.
