For a taste of traditional Croatia, head to Rastoke (40 minutes), where the old wooden houses are still very much in evidence and you can seek out little corners like the old mill and the ethnographic museum. There are some spectacular waterfalls and a hidden cave over here too, so it’s worth planning a whole day to explore it all. If you’re after ticking off some of Croatia’s big attractions, you can get to both Zagreb and the Plitvice Lakes National Park with a drive of an hour or so.
