  • Cottages on Peninsula Lake, 15 minutes' drive from Huntsville
  • Free use of boats, paddleboards, pedalos, kayaks and canoes
  • Fishing, play area and lodge with wifi, piano, library and breakfasts
You can rent cottages on a daily or a weekly rate at the lakeside Canadian site of Tally Ho Inn... but when you see what's on offer in these spectacular surrounds, you'll likely want to trek along here for a tad longer. This highly scenic setting is on the sandy shores of Peninsula Lake and 10 minutes' drive from the handsome town of Huntsville, the western gateway of the Algonquin Provincial Park (and hailed by the Toronto Star as the best destination in the land). There are swathes of sand to lounge on close by, hills and forests to hike, and winter sports to get snowily stuck into, including snowmobiling on trails right through the Tally Ho grounds. As it's a lakeside setting, watersports by the bucketload are available too – and how splendid that the Tally Ho Inn team lend out rowing boats, pedalos, paddleboards, canoes and kayaks to guests for no charge at all... take a craft out to fish in the waters or to drift lazily along under the Ontario sun. Or stay right by the water instead, idling in a chair by the lake's edge, having a bite to eat at one of the picnic tables, or prepping supper on the communal firepit. The cottages are centred around Tally Ho's main lodge, which has a baby grand piano, lending library, board games and air hockey and pool tables, and which serves breakfast daily for a reasonable extra charge. Other facilities include a play area, tennis courts, volleyball and basketball; wifi is available in the main lodge and a food truck serives hot meals and snacks. A restaurant is 500 metres away.

Local attractions

Take a trip to Huntsville for events, concerts, the Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery murals, arts festivals and arts workshops: as you might guess, this is an excellently arty town. From Huntsville and about 35 kilometres from Tally Ho, spectacular Algonquin Park is made up of forests, hills, 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers, and over 2,400 lakes to ramble around. More walks are along the Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve hiking trails – eight kilometres from Tally Ho and much recommended. Adventurers can get active here all year round: Tally Ho has its own skating rink once the lake freezes, and the Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area is a five-minute drive away (with discounts for Tally Ho guests). Cross country skiing, tubing, snowshoeing and a skating trail are at Arrowhead Provincial Park, 15 minutes' drive away.
