Pack the boots in your suitcase, strap the bike to the back of the car and make tracks for Alexandrovo Camping. At the family-friendly site on the outskirts of the village of Aleksandrovo in the Haskovo region of South Central Bulgaria, you’re going to be spending much of your time out and about. Alexandrovo is a prime spot to use as a base for exploring the countryside of the Haskovo region – there are oodles of walking and biking excursions you can head out on, and the routes are all reasonably flat so they’re doable for the whole family. There’s plenty to do nearby within easy reach too: make your way to the millennia-old Thracian tomb, 25 minutes’ walk from the site, then call into the museum to learn more about the history of Thrace; or, if you’re more of a tippler, you can venture to the Villa Bassarea vineyard and winery 25 minutes’ drive away. Stave off your hunger by firing up the grill in the covered barbecue area and going to town on some of the supplies you’ve stocked up on from the shop 10 minutes away, then kick back on the raised terrace with views of the tomb or in the shade of the walnut and almond trees. If you’re in need of a break from cooking, restaurants are within half an hour.

Local attractions

If you want a sedate start to your stay, take a trip from the site to the nearby oak forest (a 15-minute drive) where there are loads of trails you can follow – feel free to bring the dog along too, as mutts are more than welcome on site. History buffs can do more than visit the Thracian tomb in Aleksandrovo: the Mezek Thracian tomb, Regional History Museum of Kardzhali and mid-19th-century Arapovo Monastery are all around an hour away. Tipplers who had their vino appetites whetted at Villa Bassarea should pour themselves over to Katarzyna Estate, a vineyard and winery about 45 minutes away… then soak away any remaining stress in the mineral-water hot springs at Mineralni Bani, 40 minutes from the site. Once you’ve hit all the spots you wanted to in Bulgaria, Alexandrovo is also a top pitstop for onward trips, as the Greek and Turkish borders are each less than an hour from the site.
