If you want a sedate start to your stay, take a trip from the site to the nearby oak forest (a 15-minute drive) where there are loads of trails you can follow – feel free to bring the dog along too, as mutts are more than welcome on site. History buffs can do more than visit the Thracian tomb in Aleksandrovo: the Mezek Thracian tomb, Regional History Museum of Kardzhali and mid-19th-century Arapovo Monastery are all around an hour away. Tipplers who had their vino appetites whetted at Villa Bassarea should pour themselves over to Katarzyna Estate, a vineyard and winery about 45 minutes away… then soak away any remaining stress in the mineral-water hot springs at Mineralni Bani, 40 minutes from the site. Once you’ve hit all the spots you wanted to in Bulgaria, Alexandrovo is also a top pitstop for onward trips, as the Greek and Turkish borders are each less than an hour from the site.
