  • Nearly-wild camping on a family farm in Tsatsarovtsi
  • A 25-minute drive to Dragoman Marsh; under an hour to Sofia
  • Swimming pool, forest playground, barbecue and trampoline on site
Getting back into pure nature is what it’s all about at Blue Gate Camping Farm: this is a nearly-wild campsite that’s part of a small family-owned and operated farm in Tsatsarovtsi, surrounded by lovely views over the hills and pastures of western Bulgaria. The farm is on the edge of this quiet little village, and it’s surrounded by a great system of trails for exploring the surrounding wilderness and creeks. There are three lakes to visit in the village, too – two of them are popular fishing destinations and all are known as good hiking and picnicking spots. Village life is pretty quiet (your next-door neighbours will be pastures of cows and horses), and that means not a huge amount in terms of local amenities – for decent-sized shops and places to eat you’ll want to travel to Dragoman (about 15 minutes’ drive). Facilities on site have been kept to a minimum too, in order to preserve the natural environment: you’ll just have access to composting (dry) toilets and a hot outdoor shower on that front. That’s not to say it’s basic though – there’s an above-ground pool for cooling dips on warm days, a trampoline for bouncy kids and a barbecue to help you prep outdoor dinners. Essentially, though, it’s all about the natural setting: this is a place that aims to offer a safe outdoor environment where kids can play in the forest playground, catch fireflies and spend evenings telling stories by the campfire while the stars come out overhead.

Local attractions

Dragoman (15 minutes’ drive) is a handy place for shops but it’s also a bit of a hub for outdoor pursuits: the Dragoman Marsh, just outside the town, is the biggest natural karst wetland in Bulgaria, and a haven for birdwatchers. There are plenty of places to get out for a hike from the town too, past pretty villages and rivers and up into the hills. A popular route takes you up to Petrovski Cross (25 minutes from the site), the area’s highest point, for some stunning 360-degree views over the landscape. Back down towards sea level, Aldomirovtsi Marsh (half an hour) is another top place for wildlife spotting: all sorts of birds spend time here, including grebes, storks and egrets. Although this area is very rural in character, it’s not far from city life – in fact, Sofia city centre is a little under an hour away by car, making it easy to get up there for a day of museums, sightseeing and restaurant dining.
