General
- Family-friendly site on the outskirts of São Sebastião
- 10-minute drive from the ferry crossing to Ilhabela
- Outdoor pool, kids’ pool, snack bar, barbecue and pizza oven on site
If your plans revolve around beach days, set forth for São Sebastião, in the São Paulo province, for dozens of spots along the coast to satisfy your sea and sand desires.
The beaches (and the watersports that accompany them) start a five-minute walk from Hotel Jota, with some of the area’s most famed stretches of sand – such as Juqueí and Maresias – within an hour’s drive. Bus stops are about 100 metres from the site for easy travels.
This is also a most handy base if you’re heading to the scenic Ilhabela for hiking trails, waterfall spotting and – you guessed it – even more gorgeous beaches to plonk yourself down on; the harbour is a 10-minute drive away and the boat crossing only takes a quarter of an hour.
As for the site itself, it’s well equipped for family stays. For splashes away from the ocean, there’s an outdoor pool alongside a smaller one for the kids, and food is taken care of courtesy of the snack bar. There’s also a covered area with a barbecue and pizza oven for rustling up your own eats.
For grub off-base, Jota is a five-minute drive from the centre of São Sebastião (or about 40 minutes on foot, if you fancy the fresh air), so you’ll be well-placed for its restaurants and bars, as well as leisurely strolls around the hub and lively evenings getting stuck into the nightlife.

Local attractions
Beaches are clearly a big deal here – and you can have the sand between your toes with a mere five-minute walk to Trabalhadores and Preta beaches. Another of the area’s fab sandy stretches, Barequeçaba beach, is also within walking distance (40 minutes, or a five-minute drive).
Sticking with beach days, slightly further afield are some more sandy spots worthy of a visit on this gorgeous coastline. Load up the car with the beach essentials and choose from Maresias (half-hour’s drive), Boiçucanga (45 minutes), Camburi (50 minutes), Juqueí (an hour) and Barra do Sahy (an hour).
Swap the sand beneath your feet for some more rugged terrain and don your hiking boots for some scenic trekking. Pay a visit to the Toque-Toque Grande Falls waterfall (15 minutes) or have a bash at the Reserve Du Moulin hiking trail (20 minutes). The Cachoeiras do Ribeirao de Itu hiking trail (50 minutes) also comes with waterfall glimpses.
Keep ambles closer to base with a stroll around São Sebastião centre (40-minute walk or five-minute drive). There are churches, chapels and buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries to wander around here.
Alternatively, leave São Sebastião for the day and catch the 15-minute ferry (10 minutes' drive) to pretty Ilhabela for beaches, waterfalls, snorkelling, shipwrecks and hiking trails.
