- Woodland site in a lush nature reserve in the Belgian Ardennes
- Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps 20 minutes’ drive; Liege 50 minutes
- Off licence and bar; covered terrace; dogs welcome
With summer temperatures across Europe getting ever higher, it might be a good idea to book your next holiday somewhere with plenty of greenery and natural shade. Bearing that in mind… how does the Ardennes Forest in eastern Belgium sound? A 50-minute drive south of Liege, in the Natural Reserve of Fontaine Saint-Remacle, Camping Le Plein Sud has shaded woodland pitches for families, bikers and rallies; dogs are welcome, too.
The vegetation-rich landscape around this peaceful site lends itself to all sorts of outdoor activities – from hiking, cycling and climbing, to canoeing and fishing. And most of that is available in one place: at the Coo reservoir (10 minutes’ drive), with walks to a refreshing waterfall or to a viewing point above the forest – or beyond, to a paragliding launch site.
For more organised (and more kid-friendly) recreation, there’s also Plopsaland Ardennes, a theme park with thrill rides and a cable car with views over the reservoir and the dam. And in the summer, the ski resort of Val de Wanne (10 minutes) transforms into an activity centre with mountain-biking trails, a trike track and a large wooden labyrinth, plus archery and shooting (please note that some activities may have to be booked in advance).
Of course, you might just choose to relax on site, among the lush greenery, perhaps with a mid-afternoon pétanque game or a Belgian beer (from the bar or the on-site off licence) in the shade of the covered terrace.

Local attractions
Originally founded in the 8th century, Stavelot Abbey (15 minutes’ drive) now houses a cultural centre with three museums exploring subjects as diverse as the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire and the nearby Formula One track at Spa-Francorchamps. On the outskirts of Stavelot town is a monument to Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx.
