  • Peaceful and lush site in the garden of a former monastery in Wallonia
  • Pairi Daiza zoo half an hour’s drive; an hour to Ghent
  • Dogs welcome; close to hiking and cycling trails; meals on request
The well-maintained garden of a former monastery in Wallonia, north-western Belgium, is the setting for the La Divine Providence. And don’t worry: owners Lieven and Maya will not want to see your religious credentials before opening the doors of this peaceful site to you. Everybody is welcome, and that includes families, bikers and single-sex groups – and their dogs. The site is set in a lush six-acre park dotted with trees (and therefore plenty of shade) in a splendidly rural area on the outskirts of Wodecq, which is less than a kilometre away, should you wish to stretch your legs or go for a meal. There are a couple of restaurants in the village, one of them a friterie, so you can sample this most Belgian of street foods. There's also a café on site, and breakfasts and simple meals can be arranged on request. If you wish to cook your own meals, both barbecues and campfires are allowed, and there are picnic tables on which to devour your fare; as for supplies, the nearest shops are in Flobecq or Ellezelles (both about five minutes’ drive). Other amenities at La Divine Providence include a toilet/shower block and a washing–up area. There are lots of excellent hiking and cycling trails in the local area, especially to the north-west of the site in the outskirts of Ronse (15 minutes' drive, or 40 minutes by bike).

Electric grass pitch

Local attractions

In Lessines (10 minutes’ drive), the 13th-century Hospital Our Lady with the Rose has been turned into a museum displaying collections of art and surgical instruments. There is a medicinal garden, too. Lessines was the birthplace of René Magritte, and a suitably surrealist sculpture dedicated to the artist (‘Magritte au Chapeau’) sits in the Grand Place. If you’re travelling with children, you might want to treat them to a day filled with kid-friendly activities. Head to Pairi Daiza (half an hour), a zoo with a collection of reptiles in a former whaling boat, plus a petting farmyard and an adventure playground. WoWpark Gavers (35 minutes) aquatic park is the place for water-based family fun. Criss-crossed with canals, Ghent (an hour) is a lively university city. In the Old Town, a series of connected central squares is lined with the heavily ornate City Hall, the 14th-century Belfry and St Bavo’s Cathedral (home of a famed altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers).
