The site in winter

  • Small and peaceful site with mountain views in the Gailtal Valley
  • A 10-minute walk from Pressegger See for swimming and paddleboarding
  • Restaurants nearby; Weissensee and Nassfeld half an hour’s drive
As you might expect from somewhere with the name Bella Vista, this small motorhome stopover has one spectacular view. Mountains are what you'll see from this scenic site in Carinthia’s Gailtal Valley. It’s surrounded by peaks and forest, and – good news for the hikers and cyclists among you – has direct access to trails. This is the sort of place where you get birdsong instead of traffic and regular starry skies due to the low light pollution. In keeping with that calm atmosphere, the site is intended as a base for hikers, cyclists and those who simply want to spend some time in the mountains. It’s not a busy site at all, and there’s no entertainment, unless you count the fact that you’re just a 10-minute walk from Pressegger See, a warm lake popular for swimming, paddleboarding and low-key days reading along the shoreline. As an off-grid site, there are simple on-site facilities at Bella Vista, including just a picnic table and a barbecue area. A good selection of restaurants are within walking distance, and grocery shops are in Hermagor-Pressegger See, 10 minutes’ drive away. Further afield, there are many traditional alpine huts serving local dishes. If trying the local specialities is something you'd very much like to do, head out to local cheese farms and the weekly markets in Hermagor-Pressegger See and Kötschach-Mauthen (that last one's half an hour’s drive away). Keep your eye out for Gailtaler Speck, a type of air-dried bacon from the Gailtal Valley.

Local attractions

Come to Bella Vista whether it’s summer or winter. In the warmer summer months, you’re in pole position for hikes including the panoramic Gailtal High Route (around 20 minutes’ drive), the Garnitzenklamm Gorge hike (10 minutes) or routes around Egger Alm (half an hour) and Dellacher Alm (35 minutes). For a shorter stroll close to base, stroll the dog-friendly paths around Pressegger See. If you’d like some time in the bicycle saddle, surely a crystal-clear alpine lake makes for some nice scenery? Pedal around Weissensee (around half an hour) and then cool off with a wild swim. For something family-friendly, there’s a flat trail in Gailtal (25 minutes). And for more wild swimming, there are spots along the Gail river (around 10 minutes) – dogs should like this option, too. Nassfeld (half an hour) has plenty to do no matter the season, from mountain biking trails, via ferrata and a toboggan run in the summer to the Nassfeld Ski Resort in winter. In the very cold months, you may also be able to go ice skating on Weissensee and Pressegger See.
