  • Family site in tropical gardens, 15 minutes’ drive from Darwin CBD
  • An hour’s drive to Litchfield National Park; Darwin Harbour 10 minutes
  • Pools, kids’ activities and games room on site, plus a bar and bistro
Located among tall palms and tropical gardens, Darwin FreeSpirit Resort is a poolside paradise – and only a 15-minute drive south of the Darwin CBD so it’s ideal for weekend breaks. This laid-back spot has a range of family-friendly accommodation as well as lots of facilities, activities and entertainment to keep everyone happy. Where to start? The kids are safe to let off energy on the jumping pillow or swim laps in the three outdoor pools, and you can keep them busy with lots of Kidz Korner activities. Meanwhile, moody teens can slope off to make new friends over games of ping pong in the recreation room. Come the evening, you can round up the whole family (easy to do when there’s wifi throughout the park) and spark up a barbecue, or head for the camp kitchen and sit down to a family supper around the table. There’s a relaxed poolside bistro if you want a change from cooking, and if you’re after some adults-only downtime, they’ve got you covered for that too. The Elements Gaming Room and Sports Lounge has a big screen for those all-important matches in the poolside terrace bar, plus a series of gaming machines.

Mandorah fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Not much.

Disliked: Very noisy, planes taking off all hours of the night and highway noise doesn't stop. Park needs upgrading. Their water main failed and when the water came back on it ruined our filter.

Local attractions

If you’re feeling like trying something new, test your nerve by plunging into the sea in a glass tube and getting up close to saltwater crocs at Crocosaurus Cove (15 minutes’ drive), or get out on the ocean for a day’s barramundi fishing from Darwin Harbour (20 minutes). Still in the open air and heading into the outback, you can make a day trip to Kakadu National Park (an hour and a half) to see millennia-old indigenous rock art or take a sunset cruise along Yellow Water. In Litchfield National Park (an hour) new experiences include swimming in ice-cold rock pools under waterfalls and driving past enormous termite mounds. Fancy time exploring the city? Have a leisurely stroll around the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Market (15 minutes) where you can pick up jewellery and leatherwork, and keep the kids happy with burgers and ice cream, or book a movie night at the al fresco Deckchair Cinema (20 minutes), set in tropical gardens at Darwin Harbour and with spectacular ocean views.
