General

  • Spacious and peaceful site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye

Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they’ll all be beaming from ear to ear at Borders Hideaway Holiday Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and five minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye.

If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a supremely suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfortable base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area: thanks to a winning combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms, and a laundry with washing machines, dryers and irons, you can emerge from the hills looking pressed and clean enough for a literary luncheon, or a dapper dinner in town. (If you prefer your dining alfresco, that’s fine as barbecues are allowed on site.)

With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so everyone can keep an eye on younger party members while sizzling sausages... or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

What a fabulous, quiet and attractive site. We loved the extensive planting and the overall care of the environment. It would be difficult to rate the site, the staff and the owners more highly.
We will certainly use the site again when out this way.

Everything! Had a lovely welcome with a welcome pack to take away with us. Our pitch was huge with plenty of space between the other lady that was staying.
The toilets were immaculate, showers were hot and clean, free hairdryer and phone charging point.
We used the washing facilities which were also great and didn't cost the earth.

The whole site is an animal haven, we saw birds, rabbits, bees, hares and even heard an owl each night.

The lack of light pollution meant we saw the most beautiful stars each night.

We felt welcomed and trusted as soon as we arrived.
Everyone was friendly and appreciated the facilities.

Oh and there is a lovely orchard full of fruit that residents are able to enjoy.

I can't recommend this park enough
..we can't wait to go back either!

Gold standard site and facilities. Weather was damp but quality of site helped us keep our wet Golden Retriever clean and satisfied. I would have been happy to stay in the field and admire the view but the river and Hay on Wye are too near to ignore. Food in Baskerville arms was excellent too. Will definitely be coming back for longer when we can.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries.

If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury 10 minutes away to hire canoes and kayaks down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire.

If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Beacons’ highest mountain, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes).

To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping.

Historical type? You can clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.

Must see

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (21.7 miles)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (21.7 miles)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (21.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Cwmmau Farmhouse (6.3 miles)
  • The Weir (14.8 miles)
