  • Spacious and peaceful site with lovely Brecon Beacons views
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and the Hay Festival site
Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they should all be making a beeline for Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye. If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area; there's a splendid combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms. With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages (barbecues are permitted on site)… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Loved everything… firstly we received a warm welcome on arrival which was lovely. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and in a lovely little wood cabin. There is a park central to the touring pitches so I could watch our little one play at all times. Lovely sized level pitch with plenty of room around them. We loved our stay and will definitely be back .

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked: We had such a lovely stay here. We arrived after dark to a beautiful star-strewn sky. We had been kindly upgraded to a hard standing pitch due to the wet ground so this made things much easier for us. We met the owners the next day and they were so friendly. So much thought had been put into the needs of campers, such as the availability of barbecue bricks and levelling blocks for vehicles. There were plenty of facilities for recycling and waste of all kinds and even some washing up liquid - very handy as we'd forgotten ours! Perhaps the best bit was that the wash/toilet block was not only nice and clean - and you got your own little space with toilet, sink and shower - but it was also heated! Pure luxury! I warmed my towel on the radiator which was SO cosy! Just the thing for late October camping! The site was peaceful and beautifully kept too. Highly recommend.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping, wild)

Liked: The 'wild camping' field, where I stayed, is a meadow with 12 (I think) circular pitches mowed into it, each big enough for a car and a sizeable tent. The meadow is on a slight incline (as pointed out by the site owner), but I didn't find this a problem.
The view from the meadow is over a beautiful valley, behind it is a line of trees with farmland and horse paddocks. Very quiet.
Superbly clean bathroom / shower and washing up facilities a short walk away.

Disliked: Only 1 small criticism. The shower cubicles are quite small. There is a sign in each asking people to make sure the curtain is inside the tray before using the shower. I did this but still some water managed to escape. A mop is provided to deal with this, but it didn't really work - not very absorbent. I had to clean up with paper towels instead.

From the manager: Hi David

Thank you for a detailed review, it's always nice to see a review that accurately describes our park to others people. I've taken on board the shower curtains ( It frustrates me as well) the mop was an attempt to help the situation but yes, if there dry there not very absorbent, I will make sure there kept supple.my apologies for that.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping, wild)

Liked: Lovely, easy to find location just outside of Hay on Wye and Clyro. We stayed on one of the wild camping pitches which was a delight. The site offered these at a discount as the pitches slope down the hill, but we had no issues with this and the slope was barely noticeable. There was a picnic bench provided which was a useful and thoughtful touch to the pitch.
The toilet and shower facilities were perfect. Lovely, sparkling clean cubicles with shower, sink, toilet enclosed together with plenty of hooks for towels and bags and wire shelves for toiletries. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such, but the local walks/maps in the Tourist Information room could do with updating with current info.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries. If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury (10 minutes' drive away) to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire. If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Black Mountains’ highest peak, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes). To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping. Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.
