Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park: Wild camping field

General

  • Spacious and peaceful site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye

Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common?

Answer: they’ll all be beaming from ear to ear at Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye.

If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a supremely suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area: thanks to a winning combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms, and a laundry with washing machines, dryers and irons, you can emerge from the hills looking pressed and clean enough for a literary luncheon, or a dapper dinner in town. (If you prefer your dining alfresco, barbecues are allowed on site.)

With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

    Lovely peaceful and clean site

    Disliked:

Due to a last minute booking and the time of the year when the sun is lower in the sky didn’t get an awful lot of sun which may suit some but didn’t detract from my stay.

Well signposted from Clyro village. Warm welcome and introduction to the site. Beautiful views across the valley. Buzzards, Red Kites. Rabbits, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Owls (at night).
    Spotlessly clean toilets and showers.
Well thought out site design and considerate ecological planning.
Fely very secure on the wild camping field as there is only one entrance.
Little room in the shower block for recharging phones and a freezer for your ice blocks.
Enjoyed taking little walks to the Orchard.
We could get free Internet in the wild camping field.
Easy access to Hay-on - Wye (5 minutes).
About as good as it gets! Superb six night break.

Cleanliness of site, toilets and hot showers, cleaned daily. Friendliness of staff. Good location to visit Hay on Wye although it's a good 45 minute walk so car kind of essential if, like us, you wanted to go kayaking as it's not near enough to the river. Quiet when we visited, wild camping field has lovely views but we stayed on electric pitch, great to have facilities close by and water stand at each pitch. Would definately recommend.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries.

If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury, 10 minutes' drive away, to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire.

If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Beacons’ highest mountain, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes).

To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping.

Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.

  • Brecon Mountain Railway (34.8 kilometers)
