  • Peaceful site on a rural smallholding looking over the Preseli Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to National Cycle Route 47; half an hour to Cardigan
  • Animals on site; hiking routes, pubs and shops nearby
An off-grid site, Gwastad Bach offers spectacular views to the Preseli Hills. On the border between Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, the grass pitches are on a secluded smallholding with lots of cuddly animals around for the kids to befriend. Walkers and cyclists will find loads to do, with plenty of country walks as well as clifftop strolls along Pembrokeshire Coast Path (45 minutes’ drive), and the National Cycle Route 47 (Fishguard to Swansea) ready and waiting for you to join at Maenclochog (10 minutes). If the kids are keen to get down to the seaside, the Blue Flag strands at Tenby (45 minutes) are smashing for building sandcastles, while there are quieter spots at Newport Sands (30 minutes), where families can spend the day running off energy, splashing around in the sea and chilling with a picnic. Back at camp, it’s time to relax by your firepit and spark up the barbecue. Pick up supplies at the local store in Clunderwen (15 minutes), or there are pubs and takeaways in Maenclochog if cooking is not on your holiday schedule. Facilities-wise, please note there is no electricity on site, but a toilet block, hot showers and a washing-up area are available, and there’s a handy launderette in the village if you’re here for a few days and need a wardrobe refresh.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We've just returned home from a wonderful 5 night stay at Gwastad Bach. The location is brilliant, less than 10 miles to the beach (highly recommend Fishguard for crabbing, swimming and paddleboarding), and very rural - just what we like. The site is big enough for each camper to have lots of space, and the kids had loads of space to play. Facilities are great, clean toilets and showers plus hot water for washing and the added bonus of a freezer for ice blocks and sockets for charging devices. We received a warm welcome from the owner and our kids were thrilled to make friends with owners children. There are sheep, and chickens that visit the camping field. There is absolutely no light pollution at night and it's so quiet and still, absolutely beautiful. If you are looking for real camping, with the added bonus of facilities then this is the place to go!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Went down on a recommendation from friends as I wanted to get a bit of diving in over the weekend down in Pembroke. Amazing site, looks to be quite a new venture but the facilities were top notch. Views getting up in the morning made the drive worthwhile and the hosts were just so welcoming.

Disliked: Not a flipping thing.

Liked: This is the perfect getaway place. Great scenery and the new addition of the showers is great. The family run site is just taking off and they have got the perfect plan. It’s basic for that wild feel but still has the amenities to make your stay that bit easier.

Disliked: Was only there 1 night.

Opening Weekend non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location is so idyllic with beautiful views all around. A new toilet and shower block had just been completed and constructed to fit in perfectly with the surroundings. The site owners are hands on and responsive, without being intrusive. This isn't Glamping by any stretch of the imagination, this is more simple style camping with a few comforts thrown in (Toilets, hot showers and washing up area) The ability to set up your own BBQ on pitch and also light up a fire pit (materials available on site) was an added bonus. Local store available nearby if you forgot to bring something. Didn't have the grandchildren with me this time but will make sure to bring them with me next time because they will love interacting with the Animals. This camp site provided everything that it offered in its description.

Disliked: Apart from having to leave the peace and quiet and head back to the hustle and bustle, there was nothing to dislike

Local attractions

If you can drag the kids away from the livestock on site, there are plenty more animal encounters on hand. Go trekking across meadows with a llama at Pembrokeshire Llamas (10 minutes’ drive), cuddle up to donkeys and ponies at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) or go on a walking safari at Manor Wildlife Park (40 minutes) to spot kangaroos and endangered big cats. If you’re looking for something a bit higher-octane, the rollercoasters at Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour) should fit the bill nicely, or you can let off steam as a family with paint-balling challenges at Heatherton World of Activities (40 minutes), and then practise your swing on a round of golf. For a change of pace, tour ramparts and exhibitions at riverside Pembroke Castle (45 minutes) to step back into the Middle Ages – and now a special bit of insider knowledge for all you history buffs – Craig Rhos-y-felin (20 minutes) and Carn Goedog (25 minutes) are the apparent spots where the bluestones of Stonehenge were quarried.
