  • Pembrokeshire National Park site on the lawns of Lawrenny Castle
  • A 20-minute drive from Pembroke and 25 minutes from Tenby
  • Massages, hammocks and riverside/country walks on and from the site
Lazing in hammocks under leafy trees, soaking up views over scenic estuaries and basking in the peace of a secluded spot… Bliss, no? If answers to that are a resounding yes, make your way to Lawrenny Castle Site, a family-friendly site in the Pembrokeshire village of Lawrenny, 20 minutes’ drive from Pembroke. Family-friendly really is whole-family-friendly here, as canine chums are more than welcome to come along for the hols. That makes the site’s prime location in the Pembrokeshire National Park even more welcome, with lengthy (and pretty) riverbank and countryside walks starting from the site, and the National Trust’s Cleddau Woodlands just 15 minutes’ walk (or a two-minute drive) away. For more watery explores, proximity to the Cleddau River and Lawrenny Quay (less than five minutes’ drive) is a boon. There’s wild swimming to be had from the quay, and bringing along kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards is encouraged for venturing up and down the estuary. When staying put is needed, sticking around the site will be a pleasure. On the lawns of Lawrenny Castle (a former home), and in a sheltered and private area, it’s a top spot for unwinding: there are hammocks strung from trees for siestas, massages to be booked, and spectacular views over the Cleddau Estuary to gaze at. When hunger strikes, it’s an easy downhill stroll to Quayside Café or the Lawrence Arms, both of which serve food daily.

Local attractions

For days full of surf and sand, there’s not far to travel round here: the site is well placed 20 minutes’ drive from stunningly scenic sandy beaches at Saundersfoot and Monkstone, and 25 minutes from Manorbier beach and lengthy stretches at Tenby. Want to get out on the water too? A surf school is in Pembroke 20 minutes away. Those who fancy trying watersports without having to brave the great wide ocean may prefer to venture along to the wakeboarding park 10 minutes from base, while anyone who’s in need of an urban adventure can stick around Tenby to explore museums, galleries and the Tudor Merchant’s House, a well-preserved 15th-century National Trust property. Keep to towns with stops in Pembroke to wander the castle where Henry VII was born and in Haverfordwest to learn about the past at the town museum and Spitfire museum. Stay in the past with jaunts to Carew, Manorbie and Picton castles, all within 25 minutes of the site. Hols deserve treats, so move along to the Wickedly Welsh Chocolate Company (25 minutes away) for demos and tastings or, for higher-octane adventures, head instead to Oakwood Theme Park, 15 minutes from base.
