Strumble Camping: Sunrise over Cardigan Bay

General

  • Dog-friendly wild meadow site two miles from Fishguard Lower Town
  • A 30-minute drive from Newgale beach; 15 minutes to Strumble Head
  • Shops, pubs, restaurants and cafés in the town within walking distance

Fishing for a stay where boat trips, paddleboarding and crabbing are within walking distance? Two miles from Fishguard Lower Town, Strumble Camping is a dog-friendly stay close to the seaside – and more specifically, this music-loving Welsh coastal town – as the pier’s just half an hour’s walk away and Lower Town is 10 minutes’ drive away.

Here, you’ll be calling a three-acre meadow your new den, and it’s properly positioned away from the crowds. That means country views as your barbecue or breakfast setting and access to a composting toilet and a hot shower (just the thing to wash off any sand from the kayaking and paddleboarding activities in the Lower Town).

It’s not just about Fishguard's 18th-century fort, harbour and boat trips though, as this site is in the rather rugged Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Strumble Head is 15 minutes’ drive away too.

With Goodwick village a short drive, cycle or walk away (and Fishguard beyond that, of course), you won’t be without a nice selection of pubs, fish and chip shops, cafés and shops either. Handily, the closest pub is 25 minutes’ walk away, so you'll be well-set to have a pint or two and then return with plenty of time to see off the day with some time by a firepit.

    Yes it was a lovely spot - very quiet and scenic. On our second night we were the only ones there. It was very convenient for walking to Strumble Head.

    Disliked:

    It was billed as a basic pop up site so our expectations were appropriate. We didn’t need to use the very basic single shower and toilet but the facilities for motorhomes were woeful - no emptying available at all. The eco label the site is suggesting is something of a misnomer! ‘Take your rubbish home!’ Let the water from the shower drain directly away? And yet charge £15.
    This site shouldn’t be taking motorhomes - it’s not set up for it!

    it is very nice and cosy place to camp. Fire pit were prepared very cleverly, I liked the idea of the rims, very useful. But grass needs to be mowed in camping areas. Shower is nice. Toilet needs to be improved. I rather to use nature instead of using a basket. Sorry to say that.

    We loved the openness of the site, and its quiet & peaceful nature. The site is in a beautiful location and close to the coastal path.

    There was plenty of space around the outside of the site to pitch tents but additional "circles" mowed into long grass, would have made the site even better (especially to ensure social distancing)! The hot shower was particularly appreciated after a good hike along the coastal path.

    We would absolutely stay again.

    * Location close to scenic views
    * Not crowded
    * Last minute availability

    Disliked:

    * Field is not prepared for tents (high grass everywhere, except of couple spots)
    * Shower impossible to use (tends to be broken or malfunction, unable to make warm water)
    * Single toilet/shower with queues in the morning (even not large number of people in pitch area)
    * Toilet basin with urine separator and "small hole", make it really complicate to use (so you most likely prefer to go nearest cafe instead of this location)
    * No sink in area to wash up/brush your teeth/wash fruits/vegs
    * Take litter with you policy - makes complicate as well

    Disliked:

    Minimal facilities, not the cleanest composting toilet (probably due to other campers not being considerate)
    At least one running tap/sink or at least an alcohol gel dispenser would of been useful outside of the toilet

Local attractions

Strumble Head Lighthouse (15 minutes’ drive) is all about the scenery. Whether it’s passing seabirds or the dramatic coastline, the coastal path will take you all around the place, with wildfowl and dolphins often rearing their heads. Inland, Rock View (20 minutes) is another for the ramblers among you, complete with scrambling spots too.

You’ll catch an art gallery or two in Porthgain (25 minutes). While the coastal hamlet is small, there’s room enough for a smuggler’s pub and an old slate quarry. Solva (half an hour) is another that's little but mighty, and it's a trove for rockpools and caves, or perhaps a go at canoeing followed by a sandwich from a deli.

Surfing’s all the thing at the two-mile-long Newgale beach (half an hour) and watersports continue to take the front seat at Llys-y-fran Resevoir (35 minutes), a lake with watersports hire, mountain bike tracks and archery. Abereiddy's Blue Lagoon (25 minutes) is another place where canoeing's a-go too, but it's also a top spot for guided coasteering activities.

Way to the west, it may be St David’s cathedral (half an hour) that reels you in, or perhaps Ramsey Island’s prime wildlife lookout (boat trips go here from St Justinian's, 35 minutes’ drive).

Must see

  • St Davids Cathedral (13.7 miles)
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (21.7 miles)
  • Pembroke Castle (23.4 miles)

  • St David's Visitor Centre and Shop (14.1 miles)
